so, I am sitting at work, bored to tears because nobody comes in to see their banker the day before Thanksgiving, when I glance up at the TV across the lobby, which is always tuned to CNN. Without reading all the gobbledegook on the screen, I can tell it's Maplewood by just seeing a little portion of Maplewood Ave. Yea, my hometown live on cnn. i wish i was home, but seeing it on tv is better than nothing |

Call me crazy, but it is probably the juxtaposition that there is a delightful Dickens Village set up each year on Maplewood Avenue, but the kids at SOMiddle aren't allowed to go see the play! |

It was a report on community message boards that attract a bunch of cranks and malcontents.

I think that CNN and Money magazine are connected. I'll wager they were "covering" the magazine's choice of Maplewood (see other threads...). |

I think Jerry's right, they were probably doing a tie-in with Money Magazine. Okay, show of hands. Who's going to mention all of this to the in-laws when you see them over the holidays? |

It was partially a tie-in with the Money story. CNN is doing a weeklong look at the housing market throughout the country -- one of those markets being the NY Metropolitan area -- specifically focusing on first-time homebuyers. They filmed in Connecticut yesterday, and were here yesterday to do "location" shots. They were attracted to our community both by the Money piece (there is a CNN/Money link) and by the fact that several CNN folks recently moved here. Their live feed was broadcast from Ricalton Square in Maplewood. They interviewed a local realtor (taped yesterday) and the Executive Director of the SO/M Community Coalition (who is also quoted in the Money magazine piece) which was broadcast live today. Maplewood/South Orange was featured in at least four segments today. |

I am pleased to announce that CNN was covering the opening of the new Frozen Food section of the Sbenois Supermarket in Ricalton Square. I would like to personally thank Lydia Lacy for getting CNN to cover this event live. Lydia is a truly amazing person who has done a terrific job promoting the many delicacies now available in Aisle 14. Surprised? You shouldn't be. Lydia has long time family roots in the frozen food business. Clarence Birdseye was a great third uncle twice removed. |

The Community Coalition is doing an amazing job of promoting the "diverse and appealing people, houses, cultural & shopping" image of our 2 towns. There is an article in this month's (I think) New Jersey Savvy Living, a glossy/ advertising magazine I saw today in the doctor's office - pretty much the same content & quote from Barbara Heisler-Williams of the Community Coalition as in the Money magazine piece. It was accompanied by at least 30 ads for Maplewood-S. Orange businesses - kind of like the glossy version of Matters magazine but covering a smattering of NJ towns. It did have a nice piece on Savion Glover as its token Newark coverage. Another issue (long wait) featured Red Bank & Lambertville as interesting towns to visit/shop & live in - until recently those 2 were much more the towns I'd expect to see profiled as "hot." knak |
