Has anyone heard anything further about Apple possibly buying Universal?

No further rumors about that... I think that item has gotten quashed by the music service thing. Personally, I think its risky for them to stray too far from being just a computer hardware/software company.

But who cares? My world is fraught with darkness, gloom and fear. Last night I giddily went to install more RAM in my G4, and when I turned the machine back on I heard a faint pop and caught a faint whiff of something vaguely electrical. Now my G4 is totally dead. No startup at all, even without the new memory. I think I'll bring it to the Apple store at the Short Hills mall, unless anyone has a strong recommendation for someplace else to get it repaired. I realize now that using my 2nd internal drive to back up the 1st one was not so clever -- I can't use either of them now.

notehead, I goto tekserve in the city. I know it's a pain to bring your computer there, but they are good (imo).

I am a little mad at apple right now. I just got the 10gb i pod a few days ago, and now they dropped the price.....and added a 15gb at the price I paid for the 10gb. grrrrrrrrr.

But - that apple music service looks sweeeeet.

Buzzsaw,

Why not return it and get a 15 gig model? If it was just a few days ago, most stores would take it back...

Oh man, buzz, I hate it when a purchase is close to a price change like that... it might be worth a call anyway, a cool shop might hook you up, especially if you decide to grab some little accessory or something at the same time.

I've heard some good stuff about Tekserve. I know of an advertising agency that uses them for all their Mac repairs. I'll see what I can learn at the Apple Store about what my costs and turnaround time are likely to be, and then I may see wassup at Tekserve. (I forget the brand of the memory, it was an ordinary 168-pin SDRAM module, I believe.)

Any recommendations for an inexpensive digital camera for use with my iMac (ca. 2000)? What kind of software will I need? It will mainly be used to email snapshots of yet-to-be-born baby to long distance grandfolk.

Hooray for Apple for creating a user-friendly, artisit friendly way to buy music online. And the update to itunes is great, as well.

I have one question, however, and would appreciate input. I downloaded some songs to my lapotop, which does NOT have a burner. Now, I want to burn those songs to a cd. So I tried putting them on my company's local server and accessing them from a burner enabled computer. Except the files lock., Now, I understand the purpose of the m4p files is to block music sharing illegally, but for the first few days I was using the new iTunes, it allowed me to share files with 3 other Mac computers. This was great, because I could burn discs. Now, however, the fiels appear disabled on other machines.

Any ideas? Or do I just need to live with this.

Is there any reason why you Mac folks haven't been discussing the iLoo?

quote:

MSN UK is creating what Microsoft calls the world’s first Internet Loo, or iLoo, complete with flat-screen plasma display, wireless keyboard and broadband access. MSN UK spokesman Matthew Whittingham described the portable toilet as the first WWW.C, referring to W.C., or water closet.

There's a story at MSNBC at this link. Are they serious?

Bambam: I just bought a Canon Supershot 60 - a new model - for $250. Works great with IPhoto which you should have on your IMac. Very easy to use, and perfect to send those baby pictures. Iti's my first experience with digital photography and I'm enjoying it tremendously.

OTH, I'm dying to use the new Apple music store, but it won't launch for me. Very frustrating. I'll have to make a call and figure out why.

mck, be sure you've got the latest version of QuickTime, and iTunes 4 installed. It launches right out of iTunes, not through your browser (you may know this already, but it was unexpected for me)

Just got an imac and already, I feel special. One question: I own a pc ipod. Can I convert it for use on my mac? Is this easy to do? Will I lose my music library that I currently have on my laptop? (I use musicmatch, by the way.)

E&K, you can find what you need here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120198

I was just thinking of doing this myself.
Just make sure that after you install and run the iPod software updater, with your iPod hooked up of course, that you choose Restore instead of Update.
This will reformat your iPod's hardrive so make sure that any files that are on it are backed up, they will be deleted.

Also, performing a conversion may violate your iPod's warranty.

This and more iPod information can be found at the iPod Lounge: http://www.ipodlounge.com/

Just an update on the build your own Mac post I made in March, you can buy the kits now.
Go to http://2khappyware.com/
The corebox is not available as of yet, but you can purchase the CoreCrib tower kit, which would give a few more options. there are several models to choose from.

No concerns on my part, I have nothing to do with the company. I have been following the corebox from the beginning, originally called the iBox, from the forum where it was originally hatched.
It's not illegal to sell the items that make up the computer since the Apple OS is not sold with it, one could just as well load Linux, BSD, Unix and other PPC compatible OS’s on the computer.
I would like to get one, but I would really like to wait for the pizza box design to come out, this was the original intended kit, but the manufacturing process of the case cost too much for the startup.

Hello to anybody out there !

I need help. It seems that I have a virus or something. I opened (like an idiot) an e-mail that said something like "how to prevent a heart attack" and now me computer is on the outs. Most of my documents and application icons look like that document that dog eared. Does that make sense to anybody? My computer told me to rebuild my desk top. Have no idea how to do that.

Should I bring this to the mac store in the mall ? Any tips for the heart broken ?

I think you reboot it while holding down the option and command keys. You'll be prompted to rebuild the desktop.

OS X doesn't have the desktop file anymore, so you don't have to rebuild it.

Buzzsaw;

If you want proper tech support, you should go to the apple site and seek support there. There are forums and places you can post questions and authorized "helpers" among others will give you solutions to your problems. Mac designed the site for its users, and you should really take advantage of it if you want proper results.

I am familiar with the knowledge base, I just like it here better.

Though, I am aware my last two posts did not fall under the "feel good" banner.

Thank you for the tip.
