Anyone notice that they have been working on the Stuffed Shirt building which is next to Toro Loco?

There is a sign in the window saying that the "South Orange Grill" is coming soon.

Nice to see something new coming to a large vacant building.

It's also nice to see that a store opened in the vacant storefront next to the Fleet Bank on South Orange Ave.

Not to complain about it, but I don't think that they carry the right mix of products (yet) or have good evening hours. What I (personally) was hoping for was a place that I could stop at when coming home late on the train to pick up a quart of milk. I don't need to pick up cigars (they have a humidor room in back) - I could go to the other smoke shop in the village for that.

But to be fair, I'm not in SO during the day, but suspect that the new store does well catering to the kids walking to and from school because they sell a lot of candy. I'm sure that they don't let the kids in the humidor.

I went into the new store and asked them about staying open another hour (till 8p.m instead of 7) and they said they were going to play it by ear. Also asked if they were going to increase their stock and they want to see what the demand is. You might want to stop in and offer your suggestions.

It is nice to see new shops - I wish them success. It always amazes however how many shops come and go so quickly. Hopefully sombi will become a resource that can help shops increase their chances of success.

It looks like there will be a new ice cream shop moving in to the old Stony Hill Creamery storefront which left in the fall. I think the sign said, "Cold Stone Creamery"

Welcome!

Very psyched about the Cold Stone Creamery. From their website, it looks a lot like "Maggie Moos" out on Route 10.

Just noticed that the "Village Kids" store is going out of business. While I won't miss their lacking service or overpriced merchandise, it is very sad to see another vacancy along South Orange Avenue.

Anyone know if there is a potential new merchant waiting in the wings?

They have had several inquiries. The landlord has some pretty steep requirements (the security deposit is much more than the typical). As I have said before, the landlords need to take more responsibility for filling an empty space.
I am also disappointed to see Village Kids closing up, but you noted two of the reasons.
Cold Stone Creamery has a target opening date sometime in April.

Sorry for the double post. File locking got me again.

Thanks for the update, Mark.

I am wondering if the Village Kids store is really going out of business? Last fall they had the same signs up and sold a lot of merchandise only to replace it all. Perhaps they wanted to give the holiday season a shot and are now really headed out?

Not going to miss them, but don't want to see the empty storefront.

Kevin, I thought the same thing, but I am pretty sure they are planning to close up. The landlord has met with some prospective new tenants already. I will let everyone know when I hear more.

I went into Village Kids the other day to see what the situation was. As usual they were not at all helpful or customer friendly. I asked them when the store was closing and very nastily, the woman at the counter told me in a week.
I was there the last time they had the signs up and asked about it then too, they said at that time they would not be closing that they worked something out with the landlord.
Hopefully, this time it's for real and we'll get something better.

I spoke too soon. I noticed that the sign and awnings were taken down today at the Village Kids (they were up this morning).

That confirms it for me that they are really closing this time.

bye!

A new storeowner has signed a lease at the old village kids. The store owner would like to wait to announce the opening, the name and what kind of place. I assure you it is not a nail place.
They expect to open on or about May 1, 2003.

They have been doing a ton of work on the old Stuft (sp?) Shirt - Any word on an opening date?

They have not given the village an official opening date yet. It appears that they have done most of the major work and hoping that they open this spring.
