Hi. Anyone know where I should start to learn about midi & the mac. I am a piano player who would like to record my music on a computer rather then old fashon tape. Any tips? At this point I olnly have a mac g4. |

Sorry to barge in on your topic, buzzsaw, but I'd appreciate similar tips from people with experience using MIDI and a Windows-based PC. |

I believe most MIDI software runs in connection with a keyboard through USB or FireWire ports on your computer. I don't use it, but have read through some articles in MacAddict recently, so you may want to check http://www.macaddict.com and see what's there. Notehead may know something about this, so you may want to private message him and ask (use user list link at bottom of page). |

Dave is correct. Most MIDI interfaces connect via USB, they allow your synth or keyboard to talk to the Mac (or PC, if you really must use one!) I'm not sure what the best options are for MIDI hardware/software at the beginner level, but I'm sure that you do NOT need to get fancy expensive stuff to simply record/edit/play MIDI data to and from one keyboard (or to use a keyboard to play the synth sounds in Quicktime Musical Instruments which is part of the full Quicktime package). I'd recommend you pick up an issue or two of some mags like Keyboard or perhaps Electronic Musician. Most of the advertisements and articles will be oriented toward more experienced users (and beware of being lulled into buying lots of neato stuff you really don't need!), but there will be plenty of helpful info and web links. |
