This is a question... a comment... and a relation of my general befuddlement over the parking regulations in South Orange. Born and raised here, and currently living on Vose Ave between Montrose Ave and Randolph Pl. On Randolph Pl there are two apartment buildings, each with approximately 30 units. Only one of the buildings has parking, and it can only accomodate about 20-25 cars. For years now, residents of these buildings have been parking overnight on both Vose and Randolph, and just paid the parking tickets (for 2 AM - 6AM violations). Within the past 2 or so months, I have noticed that many of these cars now have SO Overnight Parking permits. Based on info from the SO Parking Authority's website, and from calling the office itself, I had been under the impression that residents of the apartments on Randolph Pl were not eligible for such permits. From what I have been told, the 2 buildings are actually in Orange, despite the SO mailing address. Also, the rules regarding issuance of overnight permits only allow for residents of one or two family houses with no driveway. So, why were they issued permits? Have the parking rules been changed? Was this a "special" case? Can we expect more cars to be issued these permits in other areas of town?

This may seem like a trivial issue to some of you folks, but there are routinely 25-30 cars parked overnight on these two SO streets... right in front of my house. I must say that I'm a bit annoyed I wasn't contacted by either the town or the parking authority prior to such a change. Doesn't my voice count? An actual resident of SO? Maybe I'm being somewhat paranoid, but I'm worried about what this may be indicative of in the broader sense. Increased urbanization of the town. Looking at these streets after hours, you would think that you were in Brooklyn or Queens, with all of the cars there.

Just curious... why are you upset about having cars parked in front of your house?

Probably because you would think you were in Brooklyn or Queens, with all of the cars there.

I suppose the main reasons would be snowplowing and street cleaning, which simply don't get done on these streets due to the parked cars. Beyond that, I really don't care. It just strikes me as strange that a town with an ordinance such as no overnight parking, (posted on every roadway into town), with very specific rules regarding exceptions to the ordinance, would in essence break their own rules without notifying the public.

Just as an aside, I bounced around the five boroughs for several years, and have nothing against them.
