I just wanted to post a big kudos to everyone involved in making the Tichenor/Garfield/Prospect intersection construction project happen. I'm no expert but it looks to me like this construction team is doing a quality job so far.

Does anyone know about the status of this intersection? Most of the work was done fairly quickly but piles of dirt have remained untouched for months. I thought the general design was a good one, with the exception that there is no grassy buffer between the sidewalk and the curb as there usually is. I wonder if the contractors messed this up and that is why there is a delay in the final landscaping. |

Good question.. the piles of dirt don't look like soil you would use for a lawn (lots of rock and concrete mixed in). www.opensouthorange.com Vote Line B on May 13th

We asked the engineer to take care of this last week and to give us a follow-up before the next meeting. Trustee election is on May 13th. www.leadershipwithvision.org Vote Line A

Everything was looking great for a while there but then everything just stopped. I called Sal Renda last week to request an update but haven't heard back from him yet. In addition to the piles of dirt (also holes which shouldn't be there), the original design included lane painting to help control traffic at that intersection (left and right turn lanes were to be painted onto Garfield). Note that the crosswalks haven't been painted yet either so there is obviously additional work to be done. I'm no green thumb but I guess it is sort of getting to be planting season and I definitely have a patch in front of my house and have no idea if it is worth trying to plant something there or are they going to come along and do additional work?

Was it really intentional to have no grass buffer between the curb and the sidewalk? It looks like a mistake to me. Otherwise its a very nice, but unfinished, redesign. |

It seems that there is a grass buffer between the curb and the sidewalk where there was one previously. The only place where there is not a grass buffer is where there was not one in the old design and I believe this is to accomodate the crosswalk configuration. Remember the island itself had no sidewalk at all which made crossing Tichenor at that intersection a really interesting endeavor. It's like they've stretched out that old corner on the north side of Garfield (by the mailbox) and extended it up Garfield to where Tichenor now intersects. I don't think the configuration is inconsistent with the plans which were shown to us, other than that turnaround that was constructed in the driveway there.

Work has definitely begun again, the "Shepherd's Green" area has been smoothed over and one of those cute little cubbie bulldozers is sitting there. Interesting, the green mail box is still sitting kind of in the middle of it all where there used to be a sidewalk. Sadly, it seems we've lost our neighborhood public (blue) mailbox. Not sure if this is the construction's fault or Osama Bin Laden's. I'm assuming they're not only going to take care of Shepherd's Green itself but also all of the areas of the intersection which were reconstructed... including the 'other side' of 'the driveway'...

I think it had to do with visibility issues, but I will ask at the meeting on the 15th again. By the way, the plans for the construction were reviewed by several residents who lived near the intersection and almost every concern was addressed. If we need to make further changes or improvements for safety reasons we will. Remember to Vote Line A on May 13th www.leadershipwithvision.org
