The Kid is in! Gary Carter got elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Does he go in as a Met or an Expo?

Probably an Expo...Though he's a Met as far as I'm concerned...It sure would be nice to see keith join him one day. However, with guys now hitting 50 home runs a year, Captain Keith's stats look even weaker...

Carter's honor is well deserved. Murray was a Met also... The worst team money could buy.

Carter doesn't decide how he goes in. The HoF makes the decision.

Keith has a better chance going in as an old-timer. Players who competed with and against him always realized how good he was. Had he taken care of himself he could have played effectively, longer.

I always thought the Rich Kotite Jets or last years Knicks were the worst team(s) money could buy.

Wharfrat: Are you sure about your first statement? I thought the player chose how he was enshrined. I seem to recall that there was some debate a short while ago about how Roger Clemens would be represented in the Hall (I know, I know, why pay attention to some guy who has already annointed himself).

Not anymore....thank Dave Winfield for this one. When he was enshrined, he auctioned off his team affiliation to the San Diego Padres for a cool million.

As a result the HoF said they would decide.

Roger Clemens in all likely hood goes in as a Red Sox, as does Wade Boggs. There is irony here because both got WS rings playing for the Yankees.

OUCH!!!

It was a mystery to me why it took the writers this long. If you're the dominant player at your position for most of a decade (which Carter was), you should be a shoo-in.

would love to see Carter in as a Met, but would be happy to see the Expos cap on his plaque.

He would be Montreal's only inductee, and this amy be that franchise's last chance to induct someone, as they will probably be moved.

I would say the delay is based on his solid, but not terific numbers vs. the best catchers in the Hall. He was "just" the best of the bunch, with Fisk. I also think his attitude rubs some people the wrong way.

The NL record for games caught is a plus.

Game 6, 1986 NL play-offs against Houston. 10th inning, Jesse Orosco pitching for the Metsys, Kevin Bass up:

Keith Hernandez calls time-out, walks to the mound, motioning Carter to meet with him. Keith says to Carter, "I'll kill you if you call for another slider, nothing but fastballs..."

I always thought Met management (Frank Cashen) squandered a golden opportunity by breaking up the 1986 team.

Eventually they unceremoniously released Keith and Carter.

always a fun quiz:

Name current players who will without a doubt be in the hall some day... Off the top of my head.....Bonds, Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Trevor Hoffman, Ricky Henderson, Bagwell, AROD, IROD, Piazza, Junior, Kent, Chipper, Sosa , Big Unit, Schilling

I'm a NL guy so I'm sure I've missed a few AL'ers...My list assumes they never play another game...I would imagine a guy like even Jeter would fall short as a result...

if it's "never play another game",
then off the top of my head I'd say that Chipper, Sosa, Kent are not there, and Bagwell may have the years but would hardly be a shoo-in.
Longevity counts alot.

this isn't the football hall where the folks in Canton induct everyone.

Hoffman -- no way. The Hall voters are averse to electing relievers -- see Gossage, Sutter, etc. He'd have to have a lot more big years to receive consideration.

Trevor Hoffman? Nope. Relievers are tough. I don't think longevity is going to help otherwise Jesse Orosco will enter the Hall hands down. John Franco could make it if he returns and wins a ring. Sosa has a shot. Chipper's a fine player with nice stats but as an outfielder, there are plenty with better. Robbie Alomar is a first ballot winner as is Vladimir Guerrero and Jason Giambi (if they keep it up). What about Edgar Martinez and Rafael Palmiero? Others?

hoffman probably has a problem being a closer.. Too bad, because he's fantastic. Palmerio's probably in a similar situation to bagwell...Frank Thomas...He was once a shoo-in...Not so sure anymore...Chipper has I think 8 straight 100 RBI+ seasons in a row, pretty amazing...Sosa is a no brainer...60+ homers like what 5-6 straight years...He's already must be close to 500 for the career.. I don't see Edgar the DH making it...How about larry Walker? Helton?

If Franco ever makes the hall, I'll throw up. I'm a Met fan and he's closed a ton of games, but an alltime great? Stats can mislead....

Not quite-Sosa's last 6 HR totals ('97-02):

36-66-63-50-66-49

I would say he's the closest of your original cast in the if-they-quit-today catagory, esp. with 499 career HRs.
But- he's also in a hitter's park, in a huge hitter's era. Still needs thought in my mind.

How about Jeter, Bernie W. and Barry Larkin? Incidentally, along with Sosa cracking the 500 HR mark this year, McGriff, Palmiero and Griffey should do it, too. Bagwell also will get to 2000 hits and 400 HRs in 2003. Mark Grace should get 2500 hits this year which shocks me.

And Jim Thome? From 96-02, he's hit 38, 40, 30, 33, 37, 49 and 52 homers. Has a career .287 avg. Closing in on 1000 RBIs and 400 HRs. Strikes out too much, though.

E&K,
If they quit today:

no, no, no and no.

All but Bernie have good odds to make it if they keep piling on good seasons, though.

E&K..K's mean nothing as far as Thome is concerned. After all Mr. October made the Hall. Thome is well on his way.. If Grace gets 3,000 hits and it looks like he'll fall short, he would deserve a spot. You have to wonder if Junior will ever get to 500 at this point. Bags is so under rated because he plays in Houston..His numbers are insane especially his RBI and SB total..

Jeter obviously goes in assuming he plays another 3-4 years at his level...I don't see Bernie ever making it. I could also see Larkin getting constantly overlooked ala Steve Garvey. Stat wise, though he must be right there with Molitor and Yount... Mcgriff will make it one day.

Others to consider, Biggio, Mariano, Pedro Martinez, and again I'll make a claim for He and Biggio are probably the two best hitting second baseman of all time..

Andruw Jones has like 3 Gold Gloves and he's like 26....He's on his way...
