I was wondering, who is responsible for cleaning the sidewalks after a snowfall. I checked the SO Village code online and it clearly states a specific time frame in which all sidewalks are to be cleared. Can someone please tell me who is responsible for making sure this is taking place. Walking to the train station in South Orange is hazardous. What's worse is that it has now become ice under snow in most cases. Can someone see that something is done about this?!? Also, who is responsible for the corner properties cleaning the snow to the street for pedestrians to cross the streets, is this the town or the homeowner. I recently saw Maplewood crews out clearing the sidewalks at the corners. Eventually someone is going to slip and fall (I did two weeks ago), our children walk these streets to school. It will not be good when someone gets hurt.

Two other neighborhoods I've lived in (Cliffside Park here in Jersey and Quincy in Mass.) had ordinances that require homeowners to clear their sidewalks, but as far as I know, no one has ever been fined. (Revenue opportunity!)

That said, I would expect corner lot homeowners to clear the snow all the way to the street. If it's not the law, it should just be a courtesy. I have easements on both sides of my property, and I always clear the snow from the sidewalks in front of them...because it's the right thing to do.

sgt.,

You shovel the sidewalk on that bridge?

After your driveway, you must have one heck of a strong back!!

The bridge is the easy part. It's smoooooth...unlike that damn driveway!

The way I see it, the exercise saves me $1000/yr on a gym membership.

It used to be that the mailman wouldn't deliver mail if the walks weren't clear. One place we lived, the landlord was responsible for clearing the sidewalks. When he didn't, the mailman told us he wouldn't come back until they were shoveled.

I walk to and fro the train station and am always so aggravated by the sidewalks. The snow I don't mind so much, but when it all ices over like it is now, it's awful. Maybe a nice juicy lawsuit would get them cleaned up mighty quick!

Thank you, George. Now can you give me a discount on helping me replace some crown molding in our house? :-)
