FYI, NJT is operating a Saturday schedule tomorrow and Midtown Direct trains will be going to Hoboken not NY Penn Station. |

Thanks. New to the area. This has been fun. What does the schedule change mean? Are a substantial number of people going to stay home (thus the reduced schedule)? Is it going to be a hellish commute (fewer trains; more commuters)? I see also that the NJT buses are not running tomorrow. Will these people be riding the train? |

I'm not sure if it means only scheduled Hoboken trains are running or all scheduled Sat trains are running but into Hoboken. We live by the train tracks and I am not hearing many (any?) yet this morning but I haven't been up long. I am trying to decide whether to go in. I have a nasty cold too, so I have more reasons not to go! Welcome to the area! |

JJC: It means that too many pasengers will be trying to squeeze on to too few trains with too few cars. "Modified" Saturday schedule means that NJT will be running whatever equipment they can whenever they can fully utilizing whatever crew is able to get to their assigned location to drive/work the trains. Net result is that people boarding the train at the first couple of stops (Dover, Denville) will have skeleton service while those of us wishing to board the train closer in (Maplewood/South Orange/Mountain Station) will have NO service since even the vestibules will be packed by the time the trains reach us.

Joan- How right you are. I was giving someone a lift to the station this morning when we passed dozens walking back up the hill. They told us not to bother: the only trains in an hour and a half had not stopped. Apparently, the platform was overflowing. The Spouse had decided early on to take the day off. Good call. |

Is anybody optimistic that service will be close to normal tomorrow? I am wondering whether I should cancel a Wednesday morning meeting now. Does anybody know if Jitneys were in service today? |

This is looking like a redo of the 1996 storm. For the first couple of days after the storm most trains were full by the time they made it to MW. All trains from Hoboken were locals and a 30 minute ride turned into the better part of an hour as the SRO crowds fought their way off the trains. This morning the 6:49am Midtown Direct going to Hoboken passed MW, in a cloud of snow by the way. The 6:56am to Hoboken stopped at Maplewood and really filled up. It didn't make further scheduled stops until Newark. Both trains were ten minutes or so late, although that is to be expected. I am really looking forward to the trip home. |

Well after waiting for TJohn or NJjoseph to call, I went back to the shovel. I was hoping to use a borrowed snowblower, and perhaps even clear debroahg's drive way out. But since that did not happen, I dug out. Drove to work, (Weehawken)with little to no problem. Most the busses on the NJT were passing me and had to be going 60+MPH. I expect that the drive home will be even better. |

George -- you are more than welcome to borrow the snowthrower, but I expected you already have one since you have so many other things I didn't think to call you! Seriously, though, if you do need to borrow it (now or another storm), just lemme know. |

No, never bought one. I thought about it a couple of years back but for the amount of snow we get, what the heck. I'm now re-thinking that position and the wisdom of having a 140' driveway along with a 68 year old widowed neighbor with a driveway and corner lot sidewalks, next to a school. Ouch! I'm sleeping with my new friend tonight, Ben Gay! I'll be looking, later, George |

After the 7.11, the next train to stop (and pick up!) passengers in Maplewood this morning came around 9.10 or so. |

George--thank you for the thought. And if anyone knows someone who wants to make some bucks by shoveling/snowblowing, please send them my way. I dug a path from the street to the door this morning, but can't manage the rest of the driveway.

Arrived at the SO train station at 7am-ish - had 3 trains blow by (plastering everyone w/ snow) before one stopped around 9am. On to Hoboken. Another 1/2 hour waiting in the crush to get on a Path train. Although we were on a Saturday schedule - this was all relative. Trains ran 15-20 minutes late. Heard some grumbling about NJT but we all got to work safely. Relax & enjoy the ride...that's probably the better of your 2 choices. |

Any information on parking Wednesday morning? Is there space on the streets or is there too much snow? |

Regarding last Tuesday's commute, I sent an e-mail to NJT outlining the problem faced by large numbers of residents of Maplewood/South Orange who had to get to work that morning and couldn't. Following is text of an e-mail I just received from NJT Customer Service. Sounds nice and non-committal. A few more e-mails on the same topic may get them thinking about actually addressing the problem with action as well as words. Dear Customer, The trains west of your stop were making their regularly scheduled stops and were too full to stop. I have shared your feedback with the Rail Line Superintendent for consideration in future contingency plans in a similar situation. I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you sharing your thoughts with us as this is very valuable in helping us make improvements to our service. Sincerely, Liz Molina NJ TRANSIT Customer Service
