I was just curious as to how many users here are connecting to the internet via Fast Internet (cable or DSL) or Telephone Modem(56k)?

If you are on fast internet, do you use DSL or Cable? Do you split your connection with a Router? And last but not least do you only have computers using the internet or other appliances(Xbox, PlayStation, Etc...)?

Thanks

That makes me Fred Flintstone - 56k dial-up from home, no other toys connected to the internet.

At least I have a fast connection at the office, but Lord knows I have no idea how to describe it technically.

Nohero,
I have cable with Comcast. Unlike a lot of others who post on MOL, my Comcast service is pretty reliable. I'm also planning to get a wireless router to link my laptop as well. I'm looking forward to working outside when the weather gets warmer.

I have Comcast cable modem and have had almost no trouble with it in the last year. I had DSL when still in NYC and the service would go out for days at a time and the connection was not always so fast. We tried a wireless router with the second computer in the adjacent room, but the signal did not go through the plaster wall. My friend also has Comcast cable modem and has some problems, primarily that emails sent to her are sometimes bounced back. She has a wireless router and it sometimes works from attic room to lower floors and sometimes does not.

Comcast cable and Apple Airport for wireless. Like Ml1 I haven't had any problems with the connection.
I go bonkers when I travel and have to use dial up. BTW, someone near me has a network/airport that is not password protected ...

Speakeasy DSL, with which we have had little or no trouble. Three computers attached to it by a router. The kids have a Playstation of a somewhat outdated sort.

Stone-aged dial-up. But, that will change next year when our MSN dial-up contract expires.

Speakeasy DSL with 4 (or is that 5?) computers attached to it. We used to have Comcast, but the service was unreliable.

Speakeasy.net /radsl/usr/pro (1.5M down, 384K up) service. Windows 2000 Server running Winproxy 5 forming a software router/proxy/gateway antivirus scanner/firewall/etc., routing to 8 internal PCs, including two wireless networks.

I'm very happy with Speakeasy.net. It hasn't been 100% perfect, but close enough to it. I would not generally recommend DSL to people who have cable modem available. Cable modem generally has much better price/performance. I only switched myself because I had very high-end needs (static IP addresses, DNS support) that cable doesn't offer.

And in the 7 years I've lived here I don't think I've ever had a problem with Comcast cable TV service.

We went to Comcast cable a couple of months ago. So far, and I am afraid I am going to jinx myself, so good. Next step a wireless network!!

Oddly, enough, for applications such as MOL the difference is speed is minimal, but downloads are very fast and complicated web pages come up much more quickly.

bobk,
When you get your wireless network up and running, will you post about your experience? Some others who have attempted it with Comcast seem to have had problems. I'd like to install a wireless router here, but I'm not sure if I can deal with the potential headaches.

Ml1, my tongue was firmly in my cheak when I posted that. One of the continuing minor topics here on MOL is my lack of technical savvy.

Whatever piece of dial-up junk they put inside my eMac. I guess I'll find out when my husband finally delivers on the threat to throw the whole thing out the window.

And, of course, I've got AoHELL toooooooooo!

Cable with Comcast.
And we have 2 desktops and a laptop connected through a wireless router. Looks like the brand is D-Link. My husband rigged it up.
