On Friday, February 21st at about 1:30pm I went to the South Orange Post Office and a USPS employee told me it was closed for a celebration. Did anyone else have this experience?

Yes, I went to the post office about 2:00 in the afternoon and the mobile truck was outside selling stamps, etc. When I was waiting in the line, I swore I heard African drumming from inside. I thought it was my imagination. There were also a number of post office employees wearing suits standing around outside.

I believe it was called "African Culture Day", and it was positioned at the end of Black Pride Month.

I am not sure why a government office would be closed for this particular celebration??

My beef is: if a celebration takes place during retail hours in a government office, it should be opened to the public. Otherwise, it should be held after hours. When I got there at 1:30, there was no mobile truck outside and they wouldn't let me in, so I was just out of luck. When I contacted the post office via e-mail, they told me the office was never closed and retail hours and services were never curtailed! I guess anyone with a post office box was also outta luck.

Which branch of the PO was this? You should contact the Postmaster at that branch and raise some hell. It is unheard of for a PO to be closed for some "celebration"..... please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the Post Office on Vose. I've already contacted the Consumer Affairs Manager via e-mail, and he says that "South Orange postal officials advise that the lobby was crowded...however, customers were still able to access their post office boxes and conduct regular postal business. No retail or delivery services were curtailed." Maybe it was just my imagination! I don't think so! Actually, I saw others get turned away as well. There's something fishy going on here and I don't think bringing it up to the Postmaster at this branch will help much, since they may have been the one to organize it. It was wrong of them to deny access to citizens and I intend to pursue this.

If there was a mobile truck outside selling stamps, it seems to me that someone within the postal system and outside of our community knew the post office would be closed and approved of it.

I don't know how far complaining will get, but good luck. I would have been annoyed if I went to my post office box and couldn't get in because of the celebration.

I've been turned away from that post office more than a half hour before closing because "the line was too long."

I don't have a post office box, but when I got to the door, the lady sarcastically said to me, "We're closed, Dearheart" whatever the hell that means. When I was standing in line at the truck, they were allowing people in to their p.o. boxes, but they had to go through the back door.

Sounds like they could use some lessons in public relations and manners! No one said anything about the rear entrance when I was there. I hope they cleared it well -- my daughter and I had a tough enough time negotiating our way to the front door. With everyone getting turned away, it was difficult for people to pass each other in the narrow path they had plowed in the two feet of snow that had fallen. But, hey, they were having a party. Who am I to complain?
