To keep everyone posted, the next meeting to discuss the proposed development of Kernan's Quarry is now scheduled for December 11th at 7:30pm. Due to the over capacity crowd at the last meeting, a new location must now be found. The location will be posted here when it is known.

At the last meeting, Trammell Crow spent much time discussing the Variance that they are requesting, which would allow them to enroach upon surrounding properities. The zoning requires a 30 foot buffer and TCR wants to cut into 20 feet of that buffer. In addition, invading the buffer would require that trees currently there will be destroyed. To provide "screening" for surounding properties, the residents have a choice of shrubs being planted ON THEIR PROPERTY (thereby reducing the usable size of their property) or having a view of rooftops in the quarry. Nice choice, huh?

Please mark your calendars & be sure to come to the meeting on December 11th.

If it is true, the setback scheme is unacceptable. Coming in as controversially as they are, Trammell Crow should know better. Dallas arrogance.

Not for nothing, but I spoke to a resident of S.O. today who had been fighting a variance that her neighbors had wanted to build close to her property line. The variance was granted and the builder had to plant several HUGE evergreens on the resident's side of the fence as a screen. Rather than being upset about losing usable property, she was thrilled that these beautiful trees were now hers. My point is not everyone would be as upset as dgm and mayhewdrive would believe.

What exactly does "not for nothing" mean, anyhow?

The neighbors who would be affected by the encroachment spoke out against the plan. They seemed very upset to me and I don't blame them. They are being asked to trade trees for shrubs so the developer can make a profit at thier expense.

Received the following email from the Coalition to Preserve South Orange that I wanted to share with you all here:

Dear Neighbor,

We would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and provide this reminder of the Planning Board Meeting to discuss the Quarry this MONDAY January 6, 2003 at 7:30pm in Village Hall.

After over 4 years, the PUBLIC (whether or not you are a member of the Coalition to Preserve South Orange) will finally have the opportunity to stand up and speak about your concerns. In fact, the ONLY agenda item for Monday's meeting is for public comment to be given.

For over 4 years we have heard the rhetoric from our politicians claiming this project is a "victory" [Theroux], or that the Quarry is just a "hole in ground" [Steglitz], or that "if it is done right nobody will even know it's there" [Hartwyck]. For almost 2 full years we have heard the rhetoric from the proposed developer and their parade of witnesses tell the Planning Board about their need for a variance to blast within the 30 foot buffer surrounding the property, their proposal to use Wetlands as a detention basin and their refusal to preserve any open space for public access.

However, the truth is that the proposed development by Pulte/Trammell Crow will:
· Cost the Village at least $1.2 million up front.
· Attract over 150 school kids, increasing the need for new schools.
· Eliminate the last remaining significant parcel of Open Space in South Orange and provide zero public access to any Open Space that is "preserved".
· Require a variance to allow the developer to destroy a significant portion of the 30-foot buffer surrounding the property.
· Utilize the 10 acres of wetlands as a detention basin.
· Require the destruction of over 417 trees.
· Require significant blasting.
· Reduce property values and Increase taxes.
· Increase traffic.
· Be a safety risk - Only a single road in and out.
· Destroy our natural environment.
· Make South Orange Village a less desirable place to live.

Finally, it is our turn to stand and up tell the Planning Board our concerns about flooding, blasting, trees, density, overcrowding, wetlands, open space, taxes, schools and the overall impact on quality of life within our Village.

Please feel free to review our website at http://members.aol.com/preserveso for any historical information about the Quarry, the language of the Zoning Ordinance for the property and the empty promises that were made by the proposed developer at previous meetings in order to be prepared to speak before the Planning Board.

It is absolutely imperative that everyone who has something to say about this proposal come out and be heard Monday night. Depending on the turnout, will determine whether or not this is the final meeting where a vote is taken by the Planning Board on the final outcome of the Quarry. (notwithstanding potential appeals by either side)

We thank you for all the Support you have shown over the past 4 years and strongly urge you to come to the one meeting that could be culmination of all that hard work. (of course, in the event of inclement weather or any other last minutes changes in date, time or location, we will let you know)

We look forward to seeing you Monday night at 7:30pm in Village Hall.

Hariseldon,

I made no claims about who SPECIFICALLY sent the email, other than CPSO itself, and the fact that I did receive the email.

Any reason you are posting YOUR notes TWICE?

Hope everyone remembers to come to the Planning Board Meeting on Monday at 7:30pm!

For those of you who missed the excitement, the enormous crowd of people who spoke & still wanted to speak at Village Hall last night caused the meeting to be adjourn at 10:30pm and be scheduled for continuation on Thursday, Jan 16th.

Depending on the turnout at that meeting (i.e. number of additional people who wish to speak) & the time that is required for the closing statements by the attorneys, it is possible that the Planning Board may finally take a vote on this matter next Thursday night.

Hope to see you all there.

P.S. Mr. Rosner, I saw you & Trustee Rosen hanging out in the back of the room - are you gentleman planning to speak before the Planning Board?

Mr. Rosner may not be speaking, but the rest of the public will have the opportunity to speak before the Planning Board tonight.

This is a reminder that the meeting is TONIGHT at 7:30pm in Village Hall.

Please come out and make your opinion known.

As a large corporation, I'm sure they've been sued for a variety of things. During public testimony, it was raised that they were found negligent for an attempted rape in a case "Griffin v. West" which can be found via any search engine.

Anyone know what was going on near the entrance to the quarry last night (fire trucks and more)?

I heard there was a fire in the abandoned building at the very end of Tillou at the entrance to the quarry. The "gutters" of Tillou were solid sheets of ice this morning from all the water that ran down the street.

As a reminder to everyone, the Planning Board will be hearing what may very well be the LAST testimony on Kernan's Quarry before they vote TONIGHT.

Tonight at 7:30pm in Village Hall, it is expected that the lawyers will conclude their summations, followed by a VOTE by the Planning Board.

I urge you all to come out to this very important meeting!

For those of you following along....The attorneys provided their summations last night, but the Planning Board did not vote. They WILL vote at the next meeting: March 3rd at 7:30pm.

See you there
