Does anyone know if carpeting, the padding and those pesky tack strips are sanctioned items for disposal at the Big Refuse Pickup Day? They mention something about "construction debris." Would this qualify as such? |

It would, but put it out anyway; they'll take it. Just make sure the tack strips are in plain sight so they don't get surprised by them. We put out a whole houseful of carpeting after we closed on our house and they took all of it. |

The best way to put the nail strips out is to break them up into 3-4 feet (max) pieces & put them in a cardboard box or some other vessel you are throwing out with the rest of the stuff. I've always done that & it keeps the random strips from getting strewn about when the scavengers go thru your stuff. |

I've been hearing about the scavenging. How big is the scavenging, anyway? Do people leave your stuff in a mess? |

No, people are well-behaved. Many of the scavengers are pros who are looking for specific materials (metals, etc.). I always check to see when the "good part of town" is having their pickup. You can find some nice stuff that the well-to-do are just tired of. |

E&K- If you have items that aren't really trash, but you don't use anymore, you might want to put them out separately. I usually pile the real trash & the other items (old drapes, old gutters, electronics that someone else may want to tinker with) in separate places. It helps the scavengers go thru it easily & stay neat. Also, put it out as early as you can, so scavengers can have daylight. In fact, I always notice that they put everything back in a pile after they've looked. It's kind of like there is a scavenger code of ethics that everyone adheres to. |

Scavenging is huge. I've been known to drive around myself on occasion. Don't try and get anywhere fast around town on those evenings! I've found that while the vast majority of scavengers are tidy, there are enough that there are often a few who make a big mess. Usually about 1/2 my stuff is gone by morning, with only real junk left.

Our pile is pretty small on refuse day. We tend to donate almost everything to one organization or another. The tax write-off comes in handy. |
