I saw the article in today's Star Ledger (http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/essex/index.ssf?/base/news-2/1048057924306750.xml) that Montclair has requested the state to study the need for County Government. I certainly commend them for thinking "out of the box" and trying to look at a problem a different way.

I've personally thought that county government was redundant and cost us much more than it gave us, but I honestly don't know much about the issue & was wondering what everyone else thought. Seems to make sense to me.

Eliminating county government makes more sense from the perspective of Essex County, where every part of the county is also part of a municipality of some sort. Is this true throughout New Jersey? I know that in other states that I have lived in (New York, Illinois) there are "unincorporated" areas which are covered only by the county government (for instance, the county sheriff and state police provide their only police protection).

On the other hand, I believe that Connecticut did away with county governments--maybe we can look there to see what was done.

The court system is one big function that is covered primarily at the county level, so we'd have to look at some other way to run that.

There seem to be two threads running on this topic, one here and one in Soapbox. Since this really isn't South Orange - specific, I'm wondering if they can be combined in the Soapbox area .... Dave?

I believe the courts are funded at the federal level and are only administered at the county level.
