Bjp. I used a couple of web sites and a spreadsheet and figured it out for myself! (Pats self on back) If you want, you can try this: Go to this website and enter the coordinates on earth that are opposite to us. Here are the coordinates: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer?city=&state=&zip=07040 We are 40 43 40 N, 74 15 56 W (OK I did a format conversion too) Here is the map: Select Maps, then Lat/Long, then enter -40 43 40, 74 15 56 for the opposite point on earth, then zoom out. http://www.mapquest.com An amusing point is that the real furthest point is France, since there's an island of French Antarctica somewhere in there.

And if you want my other favorite geography trivia: Without looking it up: Name, in order, the Easternmost, Westernmost, Northernmost and Southernmost states. Most people get one right!

I agree with George on all but Southernmost, for which I vote Hawaii. I also think Hawaii is a contender for Westernmost, depending on how far out you extend all those tiny little uninhabited islands. But you could say the same for the Aleutians. I'll stick with Alaska. That is my final answer. |

I think some Hawaiian Islands go pretty far into the South Pacific, so my guess is that Hawaii is further south than anywhere in Florida. I remember from a 6th grade project that Alaska is the westernmost state. |

Hmmm... Bjp's link says Alaska is norhtermost, westernmost, and easternmost. I guess it crosses the International date line, so it is the easternmost in the sense of having the easternmost longitute, not easternmost relative to the rest of the U.S. It also puts a Hawaiian city as Southernmost, which suggests that Hawaii is southernmost, but I don't consider it conclusive. Could some of the Flordia keys which do not contain cities be futher south? I also note that the list says that W. Virginia is the only state without a natural lake, and later says the same of Maryland, so the list is supect. |

The website has is right: (N)Alaska, (E)Alaska, (W)Alaska, (S)Hawaii smithford, you can doubt all you want, but look at a map. The main islands of Hawaii are way south of any part of Florida, and sorry, but "Easternmost relative to the U.S." doesn't mean much except what it means. More East. Unless they flattened the Earth again (I hate when they do that!) Go the other way around the world. It's still Alaska. Hey, you got 3/4 - equal best I've seen. More trivia: American Samoa is "further around" (but of course that's less East) and further South, and it's not a state. (Federal Administration)
