We need to know if there is a local member of the armed forces currently serving in the Middle East. Our girl scout troop would like to send some cookies overseas (where they will undoubtedly arrive melted and completely fused together) to a local member of our armed forces. We are of the "support our troops regardless of your parents' feelings on the appropriateness of the conflict" persuasion. Since we are girl scouts, we thought it'd be nice to expand our girls' thoughts about what girls can do by mailing to a female, but we aren't totally stuck on that. Can anyone direct us? You can email me directly at noterr@aol.com |

Yours is a very nice idea. My cousin Paul is leading one of the Marine battalions involved in the conflict, but he is not truly local. If you don't find someone who is, let me know and I'll provide additional information. |

Dear Eab, What a kind and generous thought, however, I wouldn't worry very much about whether your gift was going to a local member of the armed forces serving in the Middle East. Having spent two years overseas in the Navy I can tell you, who ever receives your gift will be thrilled to be receiving anything from the states, even if it arrives melted and completely fused together. Best wishes. |

I second that! When I was overseas, when any of us received a package the crowd gathered. You would not beieve the condition of some of the stuff we received, yet we all took a handfull of what ever it was. Even fruit cakes (which always looked factory fresh) were gone in seconds. I've eaten some stuff that we could not tell what it was, yet it tasted pretty good! Send it! |

Nice thought for the troops, but I read in the paper that nowadays you cannot send a package to "any" serviceperson, because of security regulations ... it must be a specific person. This is new since 9-11.

Thanks for all the supportive comments. I am printing them out for the troop - the girl scout troop :-) So, any leads on an actual servicewoman? Brian, I know a non-local serviceman also (he's getting cookies from me even tho he's the "wrong" sex for my "lesson".) But send me your cousin's address? noterr@aol.com |

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you could get an endless list by just watching the news in the morning. The network stations recognize plenty of our armed forces by name every day... Just pick a name; you may have to go through the TV station if the they don't identify the company she is attached to... While you’re at it, why not send a big thank you note to Pfc. Jessica Lynch. This is woman everyone world-wide can look up to… Thanks and good luck girls.

One of the local girl scout troops (I don't know the number) donated three cartons of girl scout cookies to the Support Our Troops Rally collection last week. The Red Cross volunteer who accepted the donation was very pleasantly surprised to see them. Your cookies should be well received. One word of caution: don't send anything with chocolate (such as thin mints) they will melt before they are received. For a listing of local servicemen and women, contact either Ricky Fernandez or Grace McGrath, both live here in town and their phone numbers are in the phone book. They run an organization out of the basement in Town Hall which sends care packages to our troops on a regular basis. Ricky and/or Grace should also be able to advise you on how to get your package overseas. |

The Star Ledger is running a series on locals serving in the armed forces. Yesterday featured a young man from Short Hills. I remember a few young women in the series -- the library has back copies or it may be on the SL web site. |

I was wondering what age your girl scout troop is. My 10 year old (5th grade) daughter is looking for a troop and has not been able to find one. Where are you located? Thanks |

Thanks all for your help. I will look at the Star Ledger series, and I think Grace McGrath is helping me out. Snhirsch, I sent you a private message. |

EAB: There was an article in this week's N-R about Dan Black, a young man who grew up in South Orange and whose family still lives here. According to the article, Dan is currently stationed in Kuwait. He might be a good candidate for your project. |
