If you grew up in North Jersey, you may remember the good old days of WNEW, 102.7 FM, one of the great rock radio stations. It was one of the first places we heard those "classic rock" songs (for example, the first time I heard Springsteen's "Darkness on the Edge of Town" album was the day it came out, when 'NEW played the whole thing straight through - yup, back in the old days before music downloads ). Anyway, they killed the station a few years ago, making it all talk. But, its seems that tonight the station will be turned back into a music station. That's the good news. The "uncertain" news is that it will be a "contemporary" music station. According to press reports (such as the one at this link, the DJs won't be restricted to some pre-programmed playlist. They're calling it "102.7 Blink". Well, it's not exactly the old "Where Rock Lives" place, but maybe it can evolve. |

I heard Blink is going to be a "women's station" where the DJ's mix Top 40 Hits and talk about where current sample sales are being held. This was the story on 1010 WINS this morning. |

We've come so far. Is this 2003 or 1903? Women only care about benign music & shopping. Don't discuss politics or sports - my tiny little brain might melt. Ugh. |

I have given up on commercial radio. Try WFUV (90.7) for something fun and different. |

Who knows? John Sykes was the guy who took over VH1 when they were playing nothing but bad Michael Bolton videos and Gallagher stand up specials. Andy Shuon was head of music programming at MTV in the early '90s. Maybe these guys can work some magic and recapture at least some of the spirit of the old 'NEW. |

Easy (if you're a fossil) Trivia Quizlet: *What does "WPLJ" stand for? *What were the station's call-letters before "WPLJ"? *Name 3 contemporaries of "Rosko" *Name 4 Good Guys *"Alice's Restaurant" made its live NYC radio debut sung by Arlo on whose live program? *Which was named what? *On what FM station?

WFUV has a bunch of refugees from the old WNEW and WPLJ days including the aforementioned Pete Fornatale, Dennis Elsas, and, my fav, the always wacky Vin Scelsa still delighting us idiots. I do have a vauge recollection of hearing one of the DJs on PLJ (a woman whose name is rattling around in the back of my brain but won't come out) essentially lambasting the station on air for chaning it format when they switched from Rock to vapid pop. |

PLJ's most famous woman DJ was Carol Miller, who went to 'NEW after PLJ went Top 40. She was likely the one who criticized them on air for their format change. WPLJ was originally WABC-FM |

Remember Meg Griffin? She got in trouble after apologizing to the audience for playing a Michael Jackson record and explaining that she "had to" play it. The station was trying to conceal from its listeners the fact that it wasn't giving the DJs free reign anymore. |

Vin Scelsa quit 'NEW when they took control over the playlists away from the jocks. I remember the station manager being quoted as saying that he told Vin -- "I know you hate Foreigner, but 4 million people bought their album!" I think I would have quit too if someone forced me to play "I Want To Know What Love Is." |

The on air personalities that most people will remember as the WMCA Good Guys: Joe O'Brien (6-10 AM), Harry Harrison (10-1 PM), Jack Spector (1-4 PM), Dan Daniel (4-7 PM), B. Mitchel Reed (7-11 PM), Johnny Dark (overnights) Ed Baer (fill in and weekends) and Frank Stickle (fill in and weekends). Later, in 1965, Gary Stevens replaced B. Mitchel Reed at night and Dean Anthony became the overnight personality NCJ aka LL |

Harry Harrison at WCBS-FM 101.1 retired a couple of weeks ago. It was funny. I just happened to tune in and he was doing a farewell show from the Museum of TV & Radio. That guy was a fixture on NY radio. Dan Ingram was great! I think he still does a weekend spot on WCBS. |

*Didja know that the Pat Dawson who's now an NBC News corresponent used to be a WNEW DJ? *How come nobody's mentioned Zacherle? Or Scottzo? *Meg Griffin came to WNEW from "sister station" WMMR in Philly. *Remember the "King Biscuit Flour Hour"? ...and while I'm drifting: How come South Orange resident(!)/renowned concert impresario John Sher hasn't ever offered to help promote even ONE concert (on Flood's Hill or other local venue) to benefit Arts In The Park, or a fund to refurbish part of one of our schools, or Jersey Animal Coalition, or...??? I know he's much too busy to be lurking on MOL, but really! End of mini-rant. Oh, yeah: Here's a photo of Vin&John, back in the day (credit: Henry Diltz, I think)...

Later, of course, there was Dave Herman and the Rock n Roll Moring Show. Gotta have that morning "Bruce Juice!" Hey Dave Herman...play me some rock n' roll. (whatever happened to HIM anyway?...surprised he never made the leap to WFUV) As for the new 102.7, I think they call it BLINK 102.7 because if you blink you might miss it before they pull the plug or change formats again. I gave it try the other day & their slogan should be "All Jennifer Lopez, All the Time!" Ugh..... |

I gave the Blink a listen yesterday ... Radio is dead. Repeat after me: Radio is dead. Didn't Dave Herman leave WNEW to go to 104.3 and then came sniveling back when it didn't work out? |

Scott Muni is doing a noon show on 104.3 lately. He sounds like he's a thousand years old and has no idea what he's playing (other than the Beatles). I think Zacherle still does a Halloween show on 101.1. |

Answers to the unanswered quizlet queries: *"WPLJ" stands for "White Port Lemon Juice" *"Alice's Restaurant" Made its NYC debut sung by Arlo on Bob Fass' program "The Outside" on WBAI. Scott Muni should have hung up his earphones a decade ago. My nominee for Most Successful Survival Act: Jonathan Schwartz, now on weekend afternoons on WNYC, spinning classy standards, cabaret, and showtunes, performed by top folks old & new. He's still relevant (indeed, a downright must-listen in these non-musical times), poetic, and totally trenchant, with taste as polished today as it was when he was premiering the latest Moody Blues or Linda Ronstadt albums in 1975. There. That's 1000. I'm outa here. |

Anyone else listen to WSOU 89.5 (Seton Hall)? Don't have satellite, but I do have Musicmatch on my PC which (when you pay the registration) gives you endless internet radio stations or will "create your own" radio station with similar artists to your specified favorites. It's an awesome piece of software for managing music on PC. I'm about to get a digital receiver (Turtle Beach Audiotron) to hook my PC to my stereo so I can do internet radio in the living room. Just call me gadget-hound!

I haven't gotten the hang of WSOU yet. I have it on one of the car radio buttons. Sometimes it's new rock, sometimes it's heavy metal, I've heard some "classic FM" on it late at night, and of course there's the Sunday polka show. |

Unfortunately for WNEW, during their "let's imitate Howard Stern style radio" period, they managed to trash their peerless, irreplaceable record library. It, like Baghdad's library and antiquities collection, is a victim of malign neglect and slavering yahoos. WFUV is okay, especially Vin Scelsa. Their (to my taste, anyway) best weekday DJ, Delphine Blue, was recently let go due to budget cuts. I've never much cared for either Dennis Elsas or Pete Fornatale - my old 'NEW/'PLJ faves were Dave Herman, Vin Scelsa, Jonathan Schwartz, John Zacherle, Meg Griffin, and (here are some blasts from the past) Michael Cuscuna (who became a jazz record producer) and that old WABC-AM overnight guy Bob Lewis, who moved to and was the mainstay of WABC-FM when they first became a rock station circa 1967. I still think WFUV is just a bit too "soft" - I like much of what they play, but there's too much of what my wife calls "whining women" and not enough rockin' out. WXPN, where the syndicated show 'The World Cafe' originates, has a mix a little more to my taste, and if we were 10 miles further south we could listen to it - but it's in Philadelphia and, without a big high antenna, it's a no-go here. |
