There is a planning board meeting tonight at Village Hall scheduled for 7:30 PM. The developers application for the quarry, which includes 198 rental units, is on the agenda. Any support from the community which we are all a part of would be welcome. |

So, how'd that shopping trip for the "new life" go? Any luck? I hope you didn't wind up shopping the discount rack. |

Flipped back and forth from the Planning Board Meeting about the Supermarket on TV last night. I did notice that the architecture was made more "interesting". Although, I noticed that they are still refusing to disclose the name of the Supermarket operator. WHY the secrecy? Rumors are starting to spread that this supposed "gourmet" market is going to be a "low-end" market like C-Town. Is that the reason for the secrecy? If not, I think we all deserve to know who the market will be. |

Mr. Rosner, While I have been quite complimentary of the progress being made on the South Orange website, I must admit that the latest PROPOGANDA being put on the site is quite out of line. On the front page of the site (http://www.southorange.org) is the headline "SOUTH ORANGE RESIDENTS APPLAUD NEW CONDOMINIUMS". I watched the meeting Monday night on TV & do not recall hearing ANY applause. While the reduction in units is a step in the right direction, there are still MANY questions to be answered. First and foremost - who is the operator of the Supermarket going to be? Condos next to a C-Town will hardly be reason for applause.

I was not there so I cannot comment on the applause but I did hear that there was some applause when it was announced they would do condos instead of rentals. They did reduce the number of units again and they have changed the plans several times taking into consideration many of the comments and input from Main Street. And finally, the supermarket will NOT be a C-Town. The name of the supermarket was given out over a year ago. However, the developer is looking for site plan approval from the planning board. The developer has an agreement with a supermarket and has at least one backup. I wish people would stop starting or spreading rumors and stating that it is a C-Town. IT IS NOT. It is time to look at the positives of the project. Right now we have a developer that is working very hard to give the village a project that everyone will find acceptable. They have been extremely cooperative and have shown that they will listen to anyone who has a suggestion that will improve the project. I am amazed that people would look so harshly at developers who are looking to spend over $20,000,000 in the downtown and help bring a nice supermarket to town which has been the number one wish for years (most people couldn't wait to see the Shop-Rite close up). |

Mr. Rosner: What IS the name of the supermarket which you say was "given out" over a year ago? If you seek to quell rumor, supply the correct information. We'll all be better off. |

If I remember correctly, and I might be wrong, I think it is supposed to be a Fairway Market, similar to and owned by the same company that has one on the Upper West Side on Broadway near 110th Street. If so, it was wonderful. I was there last week and the place was lovely, upscale and decently priced. NCJ aka LL

If it is indeed Fairway, that would be amazing! But I am not sure that is the one you are referring to -- Fairway is on Broadway between 74th and 75th, with a second location waaaaay uptown (I think 125th Street), but definitely not 110th. They are expanding into the suburbs, though, so it is possible. Last year a Fairway opened on Long Island (Plainview, I think). In any case, several years ago I heard that the supermarket in SO was going to be taken over by the owners of West Side Farms, which is a large Korean-type market (sort-of a Fairway wannabe) on Broadway in the 80s. |

I was wrong, it was the West Side Market, not Fairway. Still, I was very impressed by the quality of the food and the prices. Hope it opens soon. NCJ aka LL

Mark, Thank you for posting about the forthcoming new store in that other thread. That's good news the vacancy will not last long and hopefully it will be a lucrative, desired and viable business for our town. Have you been able to find the name of the operator of the proposed Supermarket, as you had suggested last week? I also had heard ORIGINALLY it was to be a West Side Market(?) or Fairway(?). However, more recently, I had heard from someone within Village Hall that the original operator withdrew after "being innundated with requests" from other towns, after the South Orange deal waw made public. Can you clarify? Thanks. |

Nancy Janow's last post was correct. If they change their mind because of the length of time the developer has two backup supermarkets of equal quality (NOT c-town). When (if?) the developer gets approval from the planning board the renovation/construction process takes over a year. The Planning board is approving the developer and his site plans, not the supermarket operator. |

What is the name of the supermarket the developer has lined up, and what are the back-ups? |
