Mark, Thank you! I really do appreciate you making that readily available to the public. Although, I was a little surprised how "few" minutes there were. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems like there are Closed Sessions at least once per month. I was also surprised how "benign" most of the discussion was. I was expecting to find out who really shot JFK, where Elvis is living and the secret formula for Coca Cola. So, did Sal Renda ever wind up getting a car or car allowance as part of his compensation? |

The closed session minutes can only be posted after they are approved and allowed to be made public. I do not remember the final outcome of Mr. Renda's contract. The closed sessions are rarely exciting and involve a few minutes of discussion regarging contract or personnel matters. Elvis is living in NYC on 86th street and broadway.

Since I started this thread, I think it only fair that I comment on the current version of the site. It is much, much better. The information is fairly updated and is actually a source of information now. Good job! If all the other township projects proceed in the same fashion, we should be in good shape in the next couple of years.

The redevelopment section of it is a big mess. An example of Flash gone bad. |

I think for those who are having trouble with the flash migh find it works better if they upgrade to a later version of flash. I requested that a link to upgrade to the latest version be put on the website. I have had no problems with it and find it works well and fairly quick.

The Flash works fine. It is the improper use of Flash that is the problem. Flash is best used for navigation, or an occasional graphical presentation. To have to sit through the motions of a Flash application every time you try to access information within a page is extremely user unfriendly. Whoever approved this user interface did a poor job. |

I will pass the comments on, but quite frankly I had no trouble navigating the site. I use the drop down menus and the next screen pops right up. I will admit, I would have skipped the circling pictures on the redevelopment section, but as I said, this is a work in progress and we will keep trying to make the site better, as well as keep all the information up to date.

Mrosner, I like the web site www.southorange.org especially the redevelopment section. What, if anything is planned for Valley and Third Street?

AJC: I was hoping for a bed and breakfast... Right now the propery is still privately owned and they have not decided whether to sell or look for a new operator.

Mrosner, What a novel idea... So, how do you think a B&B would fit into the redevelopment plans for South Orange? BTW, it just so happens I have some experience in this field, and an old Victorian home on the same street, one block away from this site. It would make a beautiful, Circa 1890's, historic Bed and Breakfast. While we’re on the subject, I'd be willing to bet there are dozens of other old Victorians in town that also could make a couple rooms available for the same purpose. More than enough rooms to take the place that any sterile, plastic, hotel would bring into the community. Do you think if we file the application we already have to the Board of Adjustment for the “The Original Gas Lighters B&B”, we could be added to the redevelopment web site showing the Before and After pictures? |

I can think of a few homes that might work great and I have always liked the idea of having a B & B, as long as the location had enough parking. I would love to see you put forth something before the board of adjustment. I think, if done correctly, there would be a lot of support for one. I think we have both talked to the same realtor about this and he knows I am in favor of bringing a B & B to the village. And sure, if it the location is in the redevelopment zone, then we can put it on the webiste. I agree that a sterile plastic (or vinyl sided plasterboard) hotel would not bring the community what it needs and not sure that we need a large hotel in a small village. Maybe you should start a new thread and see what S. Orange residents think of the idea? |

Mrosner, Thank you for your comments. There are many benefits that come from open and public debate on matters such as this. I'll prepare something to post in a few days that will hopefully have wide interest and generate public support. Art |

I've always thought that a B&B would add a great deal to South Orange.I know of several famiies in large home that "rent" out rooms for the occasional night, but having a certified, authentic bed and breakfast would be a great addition. The beautiful stone house for sale on the corner of Ridgewood and Melrose (not the Puglisi estate) would be perfect. Near the train, walk to town, private pool and guest house and only one abutting neighbor. Too bad I have no idea how to run a b&b..anyone know someone who does? NCJ aka LL

Nancy, Yes! I would be interested in meeting with you. I have many years of personal experience. For a couple of years I taught a bed and breakfast course for the Columbia High Adult School, and until last year I was a member of the Board of Directors for the N.J. Bed and Breakfast Association. I recently formed a company in which my attorney and I set up appointments with aspiring Innkeepers. We evaluate their property, or any property as a potential bed and breakfast site. We also interview them personally, and make recommendations based on what their short and long term qualifications are as innkeepers. If the conditions meet predetermined goals, our company will provide legal services to obtain proper legal status within the community, including necessary use variances, and arranging for financing if necessary. Our services also include interior and exterior decorating, setting up suppliers, advertising, referral service, and personal training for as long as needed. The end result could be anything from providing a turn key bed and breakfast operation, or one completely managed by our own personnel. There is no charge for the initial meeting. Please e-mail me if this sounds like something you’re interested in…
