We are experiencing poor reception on channel 2 but not other channels. The Comcast guy said that since 9/11 Comcast was having trouble with certain signal channels such as channel 2. Not wishing to be argumentative, I declined to point out that the channel was fine for more than one year after 9/11.

Has anybody else experienced similar issues?

My God, this has to be the stupidest excuse I've ever heard out of anyone in years. Not knowing anything about your situation I think I can assure this line was the right one in that it got you off the phone, but there was nothing accurate about it.

The first question(s): How many TVs do you have? Are you experiencing this problem on all of them?

Two TVs, both exhibiting poor reception on channel 2. Regarding the excuse, as it came from the repair guy, I concluded that further attempts at logic and reason were not worthwhile.

Tell him you're not satisfied with Comcast and you're taking your business to another cable company.

Ha ha, a little bad humor there.

Is the wiring to the TVs separate? Are they going through any common equipment, for example? If you switch through a VCR tuner is it the same if you hit the VCR/TV button?

If it really seems to be coming into your house with channel 2 screwed up, I'd ask some immediate neighbors if they are having similar problems. It's possible there is some bad equipment on the pole on your street.

Tjohn,
I had an experience once where the coaxal connectors coming into my house (mounted outside) did not appear to be damaged. They just looked old and weather beaten. When the cable guy tested my signal strength using a meter of some kind it was very low even though everything seemed fine on the surface. He changed the old connectors to shiny new ones and my signal strength increased significantly clearing up my reception. I watched him do it.

That makes sense. However, the Comcast tech (I think his name was Albert Einstein) assured me that changing the connectors wouldn't do any good, so I said don't bother. I didn't believe him, but it seemed that some sort of rational debugging discussion wasn't going to happen with this guy.

I was lucky to get a guy that took the time to do it right. I would call them back and tell them its still not right and make the situation sound worse than it is. The only downside is that they may look to charge you..good luck

The told us it was sun spots! And that it would clear up soon. We are having trouble getting HBO consistently -- the day they were going to come out -- all channels were fine so they cancelled. Since then, we are intermittantly getting that " this channel will be available shortly" screen.

Bad connectors would only mess with channel 2?

Iseltzer,
Bad conectors can mess up many things. I could not get my internet access running with the old connectors due to weak signal strength yet my TV's had good reception. The connectors seem to affect different things so its a good place to start.

Makes no sense to me. I can see bad connectors generally degrading signal, but not one specific frequency band.

I've noticed a weak signal on channel 2 as well. Of course the reception is crappy in general, but channel 2 got noticeably worse awhile back. Bravo is also very bad. I never called them because I've long ago stopped beating my head against the wall trying to get better reception (or a straight answer).

Man it just frosts me that there is no cable alternative. The same with the garbage removal. Too many monopolies, not enough love to go around.

Is there really no alternative to cable for basic service? We only need it for reception on the basic channels, Nickolodeon and Cartoon network. Has anyone tried sattelite or directv (or are they the same thing)?

We called with similar complaints (several channels have a cross hatched pattern) & were told that it was most certainly something beyond their control - like maybe our TVs were too big! (they happen to be fairly common sizes I think) So I asked if they cared to lower my monthly cost since their ads for digital cable (what we have) say that this will give better reception - not surprisingly, they declined. I will call back (on a day when I am less frustrated) and get them out here to change out the connectors to see if this helps. Ugh!
