Ok I must put my 2cents in ...I usually ignore things like this and carry on with life but I feel I must...I'm a bit sensitive to this noise issue because I love Motorcycles and have had my share of different kinds ..For the Lay people, Motorcycles come in all shapes, sizes, colors and sounds , somewhat like cars, and people will buy what they are attracted to.. now I agree that some are a bit more "NOISY" than others, but how much of this noise do the good people of our town hear, I don't think anyone in town and especially in this group chatting here now, sits on the quite streets of Maplewood/South Orange revving their bikes...we are merely passing through to get to the open roads...and you can't possibly compare a bike passing by to those incredibly annoying leaf blowers which start to make noise and stay for 1/2 hour to an hour sometimes in one spot..now if you have a gripe about something there ya go..and as far as the children are concerned I for one am sorry if they are afraid of the noise and I'm also curious if they get scared when a fire truck, police car or ambulance passes by with the sirens going...again when it comes to children I apologize. So there's my 2cents no name calling no yelling just my 2cents..RIDE ON RIDE SAFE |

Hey Fellow Bikers, How is Saturday morning weather permitting let's say about 11:00am for a ride. We can meet up in front of Columbia HS. We can decide to take a short or long ride. I'm open to any suggestions. Let me know.

Swato, That sounds good to me. I hear that the inclement weather isn't going to start till Saturday afternoon so we should be ok for a bit. |

Sorry I didn't mean to start a controversy. I know that not all motorcycles are harleys and I never meant to suggest that anybody who owns a motorcycle is antisocial. I just happen to live on a thoroughfare and I'm not dealing with the infrequent annoyance of a single bike now and then. I simply don't think that bikes that are as noisy as harleys should be allowed in densely populated areas. I feel the same about leafblowers. As for being inconsiderate -- I think that the first response to bookgal certainly qualifies (by the dictionary definition of "inconsiderate" at least). Her post might not have been relevant, but it doesn't deserve that kind of flippant response. But I think that any argument over the issue is useless without some objective data. Maybe one of these nights I'll measure the dB/s of the intolerable periods and the estimated number of such periods per day. I'm sensitive to the argument that motorcycle noise is sustained for less time than (for example) leafblower noise, and that it should therefore be less important to attack -- however I don't think that this argument is valid where the two events are in different dB classes (that is, if the measured amplitude of the sound at my ear is sufficiently close to the threshold of pain then that's the more important thing to be rid of, even if an annoying sound of 3/4 the intensity is sustained for twice as long). |

PS: lnaz, it's interesting that you make the comparison between loud bikes and ambulances etc. I think that most people probably are jarred by the sound of an ambulance siren, but they tolerate it because ambulances provide a vital social function. Motorcycles, however, do not. I don't think that the "lay people" need to be condescended to (in that they're unaware of the variety of types of motorcycles or the devices that can muffle sound). I'd wager that most "lay people" on this message board know quite a bit about the physics of sound and how the amplitude of sound emitted from an engine is proportional to the engine's horsepower (I mean really, I'm not a physics major or anything but this much is common knowledge). So it's not unreasonable to imagine that large bikes without mufflers will be louder than leafblowers without mufflers. I think that you give the layman less credit than he deserves. But I wonder why you'd worry that this could degenerate to name calling and yelling? I think that it's in everybody's best interest to understand the problem objectively and agree on some operating parameters that can satisfy everyone as much as possible. I certainly don't want to take away your fun, and I'm sure that you don't want to take away my hearing. |

Glad to see there are active riders in the local area - I'm getting back into things after a lengthy layoff and would be interested in hooking up with other riders once I have the bike issue sorted out. At the moment, I need to get some gear (new or used), any recommendations for good shops nearby? Also, in order to brush up I took one of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's riding courses through Rider Education of New Jersey. If you are new to riding or interested in improving your skills, I really recommend them. |

Dino, I just bought all my gear at Greenbrook Cycle and Marine in Greenbrook on 22 West. I paid a little over 400 dollars for a helmet, summer riding jacket with armor, gloves, and disc lock. They seemed pretty fairly priced and they even have good deals on their bikes. I almost bought a 2002 TT600 from them for a thousand less than any other dealer before I found my 2000 second hand. Welcome back to the saddle. Swato, I will be dreaming of riding with you guys from the office. : ( Is the ride for tomorrow morning still on? |

Prodx, Thanks for the tip, I'll check them out. Honda in East Hanover is supposed to be pretty reasonable, if anyone has had any experiences with them I'd be interested to hear (otherwise I'll relate back my experience once I've been there). Should be a great evening for riding. Did a bit of cycling during lunch but it wasn't quite the same :-).

Well finally the sun has come out for a few hours, but most people are at work now. What are the cahnces of having a nice weekend this summer? Just one day without rain!!! I got so frustrated yesterday I took my bike out rain or no rain for atleast a 30 minute ride. On the tail end of the ride I got a little wet, but man it felt so good to finally take it out again. If by some miracle it isn't raining this Saturday morning anyone wanna take a ride? Would be nice to get a big group together. |
