Does SO enforce the speed limits on Scotland Road, South Orange Ave? If so, to what extent. It looks to be minimal.

The village rotates where they have speed enforcement. I know that when Scotland Road was done I think they caught 11 speeders. I see them on S. Orange ave but usually in the morning. There are several different spots that are used.

I think the problem of speeding is worse on Scotland Road, but it is hard to say for sure which street has the most offenders. By the way, from conversations with other officials, speeding is a problem everywhere.
I am sure that a lot of us are guilty of speeding (and anything over the posted speed limit is speeding) and I know I see people I know who make right turns on red where there is signage that prohibits it.
During the school year we try and make sure the roads closest to the schools are enforced more than other areas.

Trustee election is on May 13th.

Thanks. But it sounds like what you are saying is that everyone does it so it's OK. Is this lax enforcement due to a level of 'tolerance' to speeding?

Sounds more like they're focusing enforcement around schools.

Dave has it right. I did notice that the county after years of ingoring the "s" turn thru the reservation has been pulling people over (I am assuming for speeding) and that would go a long way towards having people at least enter the village slower when traveling eastbound.
As for Scotland Road, we know that the NJ Transit Buses are on the frequent offender list and we have asked them several times to ask their drivers to slow down. We also asked them to adjust their schedules to reflect the speed limits (If the drivers follow the schedule and make all the stops it is physically impossible for some of the buses not to be speeding).
However, if there is a particular street besides the two listed above and wants increased enforcement or the trailer that shows the speed limit of the cars as they go by, please let the village know by sending an email or coming to a public safety meeting (usually the first monday of the month at 7pm in village hall, although May's meeting will be a different night).

I'd love to see some of the residential streets covered as well. I'd hate to see one of the kids that play on our block get hit by someone doing what looks like 40 mph (b/c it sure is NOT 25 mph) to get to Valley St.

Besides that part of town, up the hill on Speir Dr. and Glenview I frequently see cars flying down the street as if there was a bucket of money on the other end. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION!

We have done speed enforcement on Glenview. That is a road that is almost exclusively used by the residents yet there is no regard for the safety of the neighobrs or the children in the area.
I will state that one of the residents who was given a speeding ticket decided to complain very loudly to me about getting a ticket and how the police should focus on catching "real criminals".

MRosner - and they dont keep to the right as they fly up/down Glenview. Its like an obstacle course, trying to dodge landscaping trucks, etc. I rarely go above 25 MPH on Glenview (just ask anyone who has driven behind me!), because of all the blind curves created by said trucks and the shrubbery of some of the homes.

I don't mean to be a gadfly, but if speeding enforcement is greater around the schools during the school year, why do cars continue to race down University Court, one of the Marshall School perimeters, without stopping for all the crossing children and sometimes without stopping at the STOP sign at the corner of Turrell? I walk my son to school there every day, have called the police more than once to ask about this, and have seen an officer there only once or twice all year. It's getting so I'm glad the potholes on University aren't fixed; it slows some people down. Could we get a speed bump, or at least a speed limit sign on University? Or even a crossing guard?

A couple of years ago, several Marshall parents (including Amy Dahn, if my memory is any good) did some good work on this problem. The Village did step up enforcement around Marshall. It might be time to revisit the issue. University Court is far too narrow to speed, and with the number of parked cars, any driver needs to be careful about children.

Speed bumps are illegal on public roads but I would love to put them up anyway. Crossing guards help kids cross the street, but do not direct traffic.

M.Rosner: I know of at least one municipality that has "rumble strips" on some public roads. Is it possible that although speed bumps might be illegal, rumble strips are permitted? If you want to pursue this further, you can contact me.

We have discussed rumble strips. The problem is the noise that is created by the cars driving over them. I would not want one near my bedroom window.
I did ask the county to put them on S. Orange ave up by the "S" curves.
However, there might be other places where we could put them, and we should explore those.
