I notice nearly everyone on this site uses a pseudonym and doesn't reveal his/her entire name (if any of it at all). Am I a fool for leaving my whole name here?

Welcome to the world of the few... the proud.... the non-anonymous. At least our opinions count 4X as much as others ;-)

I miss seeing Librarylady in big, bold type on my posts, but I feel that using my real name adds so much more credibilty to what I am saying.

Hi, Duncan. My fiancee and kids and I are planning to move into Maplewood in June. We're very excited. We're in process of buying a house. I might get the mortgage commitment today!

Hi Tom - glad to see you here. I hope some of our more (ahem) rabid posters don't give you the wrong idea about Maplewood. Hopefully, once you're here, you'll love it as much as most of us do.

FWIW, I occasionally post under my real name, usually for posts of a directly political nature. The rest of the time I post under the name Curmudgeon - though I make no secret of who that id belongs to. I think MOL would be a much more civil place if everyone else did the same.

I've been on line in one way or another since 1982. I've learned to deal with uncivil people while remaining civil most of the time.

But I am wondering, since most of the MOL people live together, if the tone of the discourse is the same when meeting in person. Now that does frighten me. I certainly plan to be extra careful here, since I plan to live with you folks.

Tom -- I've met plenty of rabid posters and in real life I've never seen a fight. Sometimes they know each other's handles, and I've seen them bicker online. I think part of the fun of MOL is that it's not a message board filled with unknown faces, it's many people you know but don't know it's them. I think it's sort of fun that you're not quite sure if the guy standing line behind you at King's is a fellow MOLer.

Maybe we should wear nametags, or really handles, when we go out. Wear them on front and back, so people behind us on line can read them. ;-)

I always thought it would be "neat" to make a plan all to go to Kings at 8:00 Saturday morning and wear red shirts, nobody could reveal their names. But we could all just eye each other. I have way too much time on my hands, don't I?

I don't use my real name for privacy/security reasons, and I imagine that's the reason behind most of the pseudonyms. It's a little different on other forums where the members come from all over the world, but here it's pretty much a given that we all live in the Maplewood area, so I choose not to reveal more than I'm comfortable with.

I met a candidate for TC in front of the library last weekend and when I introduced my self he said "the duncanrogers from MOL?" That right there was enough to make me wish I had used a pseudonym.

Duncan, I thought you said previously that Duncan Rogers is a pseudonym.

Tom, I didn't post on MOL for a long time, because I was uncomfortable with the idea that people would already know my views (or at least my home repair concerns) upon first meeting. So, I decided to post using my initials, so that people who already know me might know who I am, while it is not so obvious to everybody else. I suspect that I will be so bold as to include my name in posts sometime in the next few months.

I have actually had fun figuring out who some people with made-up names really are. For example, I suspected from a post months ago that Curmudgeon lived near me and now I know that to be true.

BTW, Jeff, what does FWIW stand for? I keep thinking "from what I w..." but what does the W stand for? Or, is it something completely differnet?

FWIW = For What Its Worth
and nope. I have never said duncanrogers was a pseudonym, only that after the experience in front of the Post Office I kind of wish I had used one.
Its me. Always has been, always will be.

Wait, I think I might have it. Does FWIW mean "for what it's worth"?

Wow, I was really late on that one, sorry. FWIW, I started the reply a good twenty minutes ago, it just took me a while to click on "post this message".
