I hadn't checked the election topic in a few days, and I was sincerely rewarded. South Orange's " "Leadership with Vision" " claimed fame in their slick new brochure as one of Money Magazine's top 10 towns in the nation, pathetically elbowing in on Maplewood's honor on the basis of one mention. There is now a question to the candidates asking whether anything that this ticket says is believable. If I could post there, I would say a resounding NO! My household received two of these slick brochures. I must say that the slate's reliance on vague and general themes was pretty telling. I'd love to see the vibrant new downtown. As a native of South Orange, I remember that every storefront from Prospect to Ridgewood offered something to the village: from Consumer Distributors to Beck's Hardware to G.M. Stark's to Cuozzo's. Don't let me go into the wonders of Gruning's or Shop-Rite when it had a front and back entrance. Cheapskates, next to Carvel, drew customers from all over. I returned to South Orange in 1997, and saw the village torn apart: from the Sickley Bros.' Church Street/NJ Transit deal that led to the destruction of an historic neighborhood to the continued ad nauseum sidewalk replacement(s) that took more than two years and affected many businesses, some of who are gone forever. Others (Town Hall Deli) have fatal wounds. But I digress. Leadership? Vision? Do I need binoculars? Maybe Line A has some "3-D" glasses that would make it all clear. 'Cause from where I'm sitting, I don't see either. No Leaderhip. No Vision. No nuthin'. Vote Line B. Open South Orange. |

Bets, The problem I had with the flyer, aside from stretching the truth, was the similarity to what they put out four years ago. The same colors, the same pictures, the same tired rhetoric. Here is Allan Rosen quoted from the flyer 4 years ago: "I am pleased that during the years you have allowed me to serve the Village as Trustee I have been able to make a difference". Here is the same guy, four years later in the recent flyer: "I am pleased that during the more than 20 years you have allowed me to serve the Village as Trustee I have been able to make a difference". The only difference I can see is that four years have passed. I think these guys are just plain tired. Rosen has been at it for twenty years. Taylor sleeps at Trustee meetings, sleeps at Planning Board meetings and just finished a disastrous run for county freeholder. Bill has been at it for 16 years. I think it has become hard for him to focus on running the campaign, not to mention the Village. The Village Board of Trustees and Village President are volunteer positions. I commend the current board for their service but it is now time someone else served. Vote Line B.
