I have a peony which needs to be transplanted into a sunnier location. When should I do this? As soon as it shows its little head? In the fall? After it blooms? |

You can move it now if you can locate it, but make sure it gets sufficient water. It's better to move it in the fall, but you should be o.k. now for another couple of weeks so that it can get established before the hot days. If you do wait until the fall, make sure it dies back first, because the shock could kill the above-ground growth which is needed to receive energy from the sun and store it in the root. However, keep in mind that it probably will not bloom the first year (possibly two) after relocation. Since you want it in a sunnier location, perhaps it's not blooming well, so one more year won't make a difference. Pick it's permanent home and leave it. Constant shifting will give you a weak plant with no blooms, for years. On the other hand, if you put it in its permanent location, it could live for 100 years. |

thanks njjoseph. My guess was that fall would be best, but thought I should check in case I was totally wrong. I will wait. |

Move it now, don't worry. I moved one this week, and it's doing fine. Like NJJ said... give it plenty of H2O....! |

1) You might ask someone at Asseteaque or Chincateaque Island, since they transplant their ponies every year. 2) You did mean ponies, didn't you? Ed May
