Curious as to how many MOL'ers have tried internet access via cell to laptop. I just bought a Toshiba laptop yesterday, as we plan to take a lot of car trips. Need to figure out the cell phone thing now (believe this, we don't own one). Did a lot of Google research yesterday. Have to find a data-capable phone with a provider who gives analog and digital data support. Love to hear what others have to say about which phones they use, what carriers they have, etc. Thanks!

It might be too much per month for you, but you might want to consider Verizon's Express Network service. It will give you speed up to 144KBps. It works well in most areas (if you get cell reception, you get data service).

If you are in an area that doesn't support Verizon's 1X network, you can then switch to the 'cell phone' mode and your speed will be 19.2KBps which is what you would expect for internet access via cell to laptop. I find that cell phone mode is intolerable and way too slow, but I am spoiled.

The cost is $80/mo all you can eat. There are cheaper plans starting at $35/mo.

Sprint also offers a similar service.

A big downside is that service requires the purchase of a $300 card for your laptop.

Kevin--link was much appreciated. The other stinker in this is that Verizon whacks you for .25/minute calls and .69 roaming. So basically I can play online for unlimited hours a month and not use the phone. Yeesh. Let's hope there are better deals out there! Either that or I better start looking for a raise...which is hard to come by when you're the boss!

My wireless internet access is seperate from my cell phone service - so technically I have two phone numbers and two seperate contracts. It's much cheaper that way.

It would be nice, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for some free WiFi access points in NJ like they have in NYC. It's largely a volunteer effort.

Wouldn't you like to be able to sit in the park, or at the pool with your laptop reading Maplewood-Online?

WiFi access points in Maplewood?
I can find 17 or more driving to the High School from my house down Parker to Acadamy, down Acadamy to (I think it's Our Lady of Sorrows Churc) and make my way back home.
I have found that I could get on all of them but a couple, people just don't know how to configure there routers. I set around the High School and surf the web on my laptop while waiting for my daughter.
there are plenty of other open networks around town also. If you have the the right app. they are easy to find, I use MacStumbler. I just drive down the street with it running and it picks up the WiFi signals, it can be handy at times.
