Training for staff is supposed to start this Tuesday, according to my resident in-source.

The earlier post said "August 20th is now his target date", although I heard from someone who walked past last night that it was still very much a construction zone.

Anyone have a NEW estimate for this place to open?

They are waiting for their final inspection and permit from the state. As soon as it is done, they are ready to open.

Although it still is sort of a construction zone, they have started training their staff. I think Monday or Tuesday is the latest hoped-for opening date.

I walked by there yesterday en route to the train and saw the inside. It looks like they still have quite a way to go.

Just got an invitation to an opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, 8/29 from 5:00pm - 6:30pm. Free samples, music, etc.
Hope the ice cream has been worth the wait,

My daughter is working there, and last night was "friends and family" night, a private party. Tonight's the Grand Opening. If the number of non-friends and family who tried to get into the private party last night is any indication, this place should be a great success.
And the ice cream IS great.

Their website features some amazingly decadent treats. (Amazingly fattening, too!). I hope it's as good as it looks. A friend from CA says their stuff is great. I know we'll be there!

Hurray--we officially have ice cream! Went to the opening last night--I had the chocolate peanut butter mix-in special, my husband had the Founder's Favorite. Both very yummy, plus everyone working there was very friendly and enthusiastic.

Two big negatives with the Creamery, however: 1) two small cups with a few mix-in cost us close to 10 bucks, and 2) I spotted no low-fat items (other then a few sorbets, perhaps) on the menu. So unfortunately, neither my wallet nor my waistline will allow the Creamery to be anything more than a special treat once in a while.

According to the CSC website, they are also planning stores for Livingston Town Center, somewhere in Montclair, and West Caldwell.

I missed the ribbon-cutting at 5:30 PM but my college bound daughter and her friends did get to experience Stone Cold during the evening; hope to get there today!

Atmosphere is excellent and adds to the ambiance of Sloan St. However, I think the prices are way too high. You can't go there for a simple cone. The cheapest selection is $3+tax and any treat starts really adding up. Go there with a family and you will spend a pretty buck. That said, hopefully the place will have its learning curve, and perhaps offer some cheaper selections - really hope the place makes it.

Finally made it to the Creamery tonight and came away pleased. The place was very crowded, with a line out the door, which was nice to see in South Orange.

The quality, quantity, prices, selection, atmosphere & overall concept is VERY similar to Maggie Moos on Route 10 (in East Hanover). It's nice to no longer have to drive 20 minutes to get there now.

Was there on Saturday night with kids -- lines out the door.

Service friendly, but I gotta say, the ice cream is way too sweet for my taste (and I sampled a few!). Creamy and thick enough to plaster walls with -- but for my taste -- keep the mix ins to a minimum.

My little guy got the kids cone -- just under $2, plus .50 for a waffle cone -- compared to Haagen Daz -- both kids and other prices are lower -- so we'll go again.

Glad to see it open! (but I was surpried, it was about 9 pm -- and the diner was closed -- does the Blue Moon really not have any business late?)

Pete

I find the ice cream to be a very weird, gluey consistency. They must use some thickener so they can do their mix-in thing and not have the ice cream melting and running all over the place.
As for the mixins I got a less than 1" square piece of Heath Bar and my mom got 2 (!) strawberries. Wow 2 whole strawberries for $3.00.
We'll try it once more to see if it was fluke but if not it won't be a regular stop for our family (probably just as well )

We just got back from the ice cream store. Lots of ice cream and I had more than two strawberries in my small size. I think yours was a fluke. I am sure if you tell the owner (Howard) he will make do something to make it up. They are still training some of the employees.

Just for the record: Having briefly assumed human form, I went into Cold Stone Creamery yesterday, looking to try their coffee thick shake. Noting that the store seemed to lack any coffee-brewing device, I asked the sweet young thing behind the counter if in fact any actual coffee would be used as an ingredient in the coffee thick shake I was about to request. She dutifully turned and asked her mentor -- another sweet young thing just then carrying a box of cones to the rear of the store -- who tersely responded, "It's in the ice cream." My counter novitiate shrugged, smiled sheepishly, and said, "I guess so..." Not a very promising beginning to my transaction, but since my errand was merely research for this MOL post, I plowed onward, asking for a coffee thick shake. No coffee, just coffee ice cream, plus some sort of milkish liquid, and finally a small measuring cup-full of a light brown powder went into the mixer; it whirred for a minute, and I was presented with my shake.

My review: CSC's cup of too-sweet coffee glop was certainly quite thick, but had little of the requisite coffee kick found even in the artless Dunkin Donuts Coffee-Coolata. At $3.50, I'll not be back for another. Maybe I'll have better luck with one of the store's flagship items on my next visit.

--The Oracle of MOL

BTW: My favorite ice creams (coffee included) are found at:
Bassett's

Stefano: The owners says pistachio ice cream is his favorite, but there has been very little demand for it and is thinking that of not keeping it as a mainstay but offering it every now and then.

My daughter, who works at Cold Stone several evenings a week, said that a young (4 or so) boy came in and requested pistachio ice cream with Gummi bears and Reese's pieces mixed in. She asked him was he sure, and offered to give him some pistachio to taste to be sure that was what he wanted, but he assured her that he was familiar with pistachio ice cream and that was indeed what he wanted. And he ate it and presumably liked it, although the combination does seem mildly revolting.
