I reposted this from another message board community to which I belong, any suggetions ....

"I am asking some questions about visiting Brooklyn and places to stay (I'm spending 2 weeks in NYC, mostly in Brooklyn, doing research for a book). Didn't get much response there so I'm wonering if there's anyone here who's familiar with Brooklyn and can help me out a bit?I've pretty much narrowed down the options for what I can afford to...the Y. For a 2-week stay, with the money my grant allows, it seems reasonable. Plus I like the fact that the Y's have gyms and pools, because I'll be out working in the day but will probably be in my room alone a lot most evenings, and since I don't know the area well (and have the usual non-New Yorker nervousness about being out on the streets at night) I'll be grateful for some in-building options for stuff to do.So, the two Y's in Brooklyn that are listed as having guest rooms are the Greenpoint Y and the North Brooklyn (Twelve Towns). I got the info from the YMCA site: http://www.ymcanyc.org/ygny/YMCA.html?branch=guest&body=guestabout&What I need to know, and what I'm sure they won't tell me if I call and ask bluntly, is, is either of these places a dive? Or in a really horribly dangerous neighbourhood? (I notice one mentions 24-hour security). Can you usually count on a Y to be clean, secure and, well, not a place where you'll be raped in the stairwell? I know my aunt and uncle used to always take tours of college students to stay at a Y in Manhattan and loved it, but that's all I know. The addresses of the two Y's I'm looking at are: 99 Meserole Avenue, and 570 Jamaica Avenue. Do those ring any bells (e.g., alarm bells???) for anyone?Would really appreciate any input anyone can offer.Thank"

Where in Brooklyn will this person be conducting research? Does the person intend to get around by using public transportation? If so, Manhattan may be a more convenient place to stay than either of these addresses in Brooklyn given the way in which the subway system is laid out.

i would definitely stay away from those Y locations. here is a link for a comfort inn in a really nice, safe area of brooklyn -- bay ridge. we had a business there a while back. lots of shops, restaurants, activity.

My daughter, age 25 (feel free to draw conclusions about her accommodation standards) says Greenpoint Y is very clean, very nice, in safest/nicest area of Greenpoint and that there's a police station right across the street.

Note: I think that Algebra's other-forum-poster has made a tricky request. People have radically different notions about what is acceptably clean, safe, etc.

Sorry. I should have added my daughter never stayed in the Greenpoint Y but she used its facilities and, I think, taught a class there.

My parents used to stay at the Garde Green Bed and Breakfast in Park Slope when they came to visit and they found it reasonably priced and very nice. Its on a lovely tree-lined street..

They should check out Craig's List NY:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/
It's a free classifieds site that is just about the best way to find ANYTHING in the NY area. From acting jobs to roomshares to free couches.

The best-of part of Craig's list is addictive.
