Both the dishwasher and coffee maker are on the blink. Any ideas as to which brands/models with which to replace them? Thanks!

KitchenAid 12 cup coffee maker has worked out nicely for us. Both the timer and non timer models are excellent. Macy's or the like; timer model $80, non timer $60.

The last dishwasher I bought was in 1990, and it too was a KitchenAid. I think there are some pretty high end manufacturers out there now. The feature I would like in our next model is one where the controls are on the top of the door, so that when the unit is closed, you don't see any knobs or buttons.

To add one thing about the coffee maker; KitchenAid has designed it so that the water heater makes the coffee quite hot, and the carafe heater doesn't burn the coffee after its been brewed.

I would vote to NOT go with Cusinart coffee maker. it DOES make excellent coffee and has a thermostatic control so the coffee does not boil.

But boy -- its a pain in the b*tt -- has to be closed just so or it makes a mess, timer a pain. I'll ahve friends come over who want to help out making cofee -- and inevitably it goes wrong. Cusinart replaced it once under warranty -- and the new one is marginally better. Also -- the carafe broke -- and only place to get it is from cuisinart.

(shoulda bought a sunbeam @ 8.99 from shoprite!)

i have returned to using a farberware electric percolator after 20 years, and enjoy a piping hot cup of starbucks gold coast each morning. i also love the simple design. the 8 cup percolator costs about $40.

The Kitchenaid coffee maker is very good in that it has a separate brewing vs. warming element.

For a dishwasher, check out the Fisher and Paykel, Energy Star Rated. I think Karl's sells them. I have heard good things about them.

Our Circa 1980 dishwater finally kicked last year, and we splurged for the Fisher and Paykel. It is fantastic. Saves energy and does a remarkable job cleaning. In the same space as our old dishwasher, it has twice as much capacity, and the double drawer set up allows you to do smaller loads as needed. Even handles China/delicates. Downside is that the rest of the kitchen looks even shabbier in comparison(if that is possible)...
