Where is the best place to teach a teen-ager to drive? What's your experience? We started in the pool parking lot yesterday, staying well away from any parked cars. We won't be able to do that late this week, what with the Garden Club sale. Can you recommend a similar sort of place? Also, when you take a teen-ager out on the actual road for the first time, where do you go? |

Personally -- I think its best when my teen uses her Mom's car (my ex-wife) ;-) We live near South Mountain Annex -- and this Saturday while we were in the parking lot, a Mom and her daughter also showed up to try driving! That parking lot is TOO small for two student drivers! Her Mom has taken her to the large chain store lots on route 22. So far everyone has survived :-o Good luck - Pete |

Way too small! I was thinking of trying the SOMS lot. Whay about going on the road - where's a nice, quiet , little street with absolutely no traffic, distractions, children, animals, signs of life, or parked cars? |

If you feel like a trek, Garden State Plaza has a huge parking lot, stop lights, real streets and is closed on Sundays. |

Mall parking lots (when closed) are excellent places to learn how to drive, as Greenetree says. I've had a driving license for almost 20 years, but 7 years ago I learned how to drive a stickshift at the Willowbrook Mall lot, and it worked well. Back in the day when I was a teenager, my mother taught me to drive by going to garage sales on Saturdays: lots of parallel parking practice, quiet streets, not much commercial traffic, familiar terrain (and a few bargains to boot). |

If you go out to Livingston Mall, there is a satellite lot tucked away by South Orange Avenue, to the right as you enter the mall from South Orange Avenue. It is vacant, even during holiday season. If you don't mind the drive, it might work for new drivers. www.opensouthorange.com Vote Line B on May 13th

The top lot above Whole Foods hardly ever has many cars on it. Worked for us! |

There are lots of street in SO that are well known as great places to teach teenagers to drive. However, as a favor to the residents of those local streets, I don't think it is fair to post the names on this well read BB. Private line me for my suggestions, and then I'll swear I never gave them to you. He He NCJ aka LL
