[I tried to get this started in the Arts/Dining/Travel forum, but didn't get much response, so I'm trying again here.]

This really seems to be my time for seeking the help of the august members of MOL.

We want to go to London for a week in August. We're a family of five; the children range in age from 11 to 16. I've checked fares at Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, and American Express, and am not impressed. What travel sites (or other resources) are best for getting good air fares? Or does anyone know a really, really good agent?

Thanks.

Thanks!

RT-
Check the airlines websites. They aren't doing very well right now, so you may hit a sale. I suspect that as May marches on, European fares will go down. Sign up for e-mail sale alerts with Continental, British Air, Virgin, American, etc. In fact, BA and Virgin are at war right now, so you may find a decent deal.

Continental flies into Gatwick, which can be
cheaper. I've gone to London twice in the past couple months - one ticket was $350 r/t & the other was $1200. I stayed the weekend on the $350 fare, so it made a big difference. If you are willing to take the Continental 10pm out of Newark on a Friday or Saturday, you may find more empty seats (fewer business travelers).

I, too, have been unimpressed with the "cheap" sites. It seems the airlines don't want to pay fees in a tight market, so they hold many of their own good fares.

Oops- the Continental 10p is into Amsterdam.

The same theory holds for the late night weekend flight, tho.

Unfortunately August is the most expensive month to fly to Europe. If you went now you could probably get tickets less than $400 - I would expect to pay up to double that in July and August - even on sharply discounted fares.
I agree with Greenetree - keep surfing the airlines websites. While the number of travellers is certainly way down most of the airlines have cut flights so there aren't as many available seats as you would think.
