For the next four months, the bridge that spans the Rahway River will be closed. This means you will no longer be able to go from Valley to Millburn Avenues along Vauxhall. They are going to retime some of the traffic lights along Valley to handle the backups. Sounds like fun. |

How will people get access to the location of a famous Revolutinary War site?!? (Not that Ive seen it as a major walking tour attraction..but there is a worn, crooked sign on the crumbling concrete bridge indicating its place in history.) |

All you do is go to Valley, turn right on Vaux Hall and into the shopping center from the other end. There's an article about it in today's Star-Ledger. |

Two thoughts: 1. Four months planned = 8 months actual. 2. I hope the contractors use a good map, unlike the ones who were hired to paint lines in Springfield a couple years back. We all know what happened there.... |

This may be an inconvenience for some months, but, OTOH, the work that was done on the other, nearby bridge over the same river, on Millburn Ave,seems to have been done very well and very effectively. |

I have a map of the battle of Springfield (aka Maplewood, Millburn, Vauxhall). If anyone cares for a copy I'll email it. The British were trying to get through the Hobart Gap (on Rte 24) in the Watchung Mountains to attack the main American army camped at Morristown. The British attacked on two fronts, along Vauxhall Road and along Morris Ave. The Americans defended at Vauxhall Bridge and another bridge in front of Springfield. The Americans fell back to Summit and Short Hills. The right front pushed forward along Millburn Ave, then turned left at Main St and reconnected with the other front. The British then burned Springfield and retreated, seeing the Americans holding all the high ground in front of them. This was the largest battle in the War of Independance in terms of men (5000 british and 1000 americans + 500 militia) and the Brits last attempt to invade the "central states". The battle is also famous for the Reverend James Caldwell's battle cry of "Now, boys, give 'em Watts" - Watts being a common hymn-book that he gave the troops were to use - having run out of wadding for their rifles.

Phil: Thanks! Fascinating stuff. I always noticed the historical marker on the road, and marvel regularly at the very idea of it. Btw, as of last week the bridge was open still. Anyone? |

As of last night the bridge was still open. The sign said that it would be close 'on or about' so, that could be a long time from now or any second. |

George, A pothole from hell on a bridge is well, a pothole TO hell, because if its big enough, theres nothing beneath it but air. A good reason to stick to the upper level, when the option is available. And I hope noone who has posted concerns suffer from gephyrophobia. Theres probably a Star Trek episode where theyre all stuck on the bridge and by the end of the hour, theyre always OK, except for the one extra in the show with no name. |

It's now official--the bridge is closed as of this afternoon. We'll need a new post to hear your individual tricks for avoiding what already appears to be a local traffic nightmare. |

The bridge is slated to be closed for 145 days, according to a friend who works for Union County Dept of Public Works. For those of you who can't do the math, that's nearly five months. |
