I need to have a painting appraised as part of an estate settlement. The artist is fairly obscure. My goal is to obtain the lowest possible credible (with tax authorities) appraisal. Any suggestions. |

Hopefully someone else will have better first-hand knowledge, but a friend was looking to get a piece of art appraised so she asked someone she knew in art business how to go about it. She was told a couple of things - first to look for galleries that might sell other items by the artist and ask the gallery folks. Secondly, find out as much as you can about the artist. If the artist is obsure, as you say, it is really hard to appraise. She was told to put it on EBay and see what folks were willing to pay. |

Have you done a search on line? Some web surfing might help you find a gallery that handles this artist. A good auction house will also have that info. In this situation, it might be better to pay for an appraisal than to depend on recent sales both for tax and insurance purposes. To give you a rough idea, there are web sources that publish the sale prices of artist's works. Some charge a fee, some don't. Robin Hutchins may have some contacts as well. |

You might try contacting one of the local auction houses. They usually have appraisers either on staff or on call who can place a value on most types of art and collectables. |

Tjohn - try Lincoln Galleries in West Orange - talk to Norman Schrvener who owns the toy store in the village - he's one of the auctioneers there. |
