I just received the latest political mailing from the incumbents and was very relieved to see they did not stoop to the pathetic level of Steglitz & Theorux 2 years ago. However, there were some things about it that troubled me: First, the use of the term "BS" in the mailing seems a little obnoxious. How are parents supposed to explain that to their kids who read the mail? Second, the mailing simply seems to continue the overriding theme of "Coming Soon" that we have been hearing for so long, without any specifics. People are tired of hearing "Coming Soon". For example: The carpet store is listed as "Construction". To my knowledge that store is still open & functioning. 16 W South Orange Ave is listed as "Refurb". So what? Based on what we saw with Beifus, it could sit there rotting for another 7 years, too. The Arts Center is listed as "Site Prep". Previously, Mark stated he wouldn't expect it to open until mid-late 2005. I think people need to understand the timelines being considered. It mentions the "approved river corridor plan". Mark can you tell us when that will begin/complete construction and how much it will cost? I was under the impression this "plan" was simply in the discussion stage. It mentions a Jitney that will be expanded to the "entire Village". Mark can you tell me specifically WHEN I will be able to take the Jitney from Mayhew Drive and how the Village will pay for it? I know that everyone I have spoken to is so tired of hearing "Coming Soon". "Coming Soon" signs, demolition banners & chain link fences make it APPEAR that something is happen, when in reality I'm fairly confident that MANY of these same items will still be being discussed 4 years from now if we continue on the path we have been on. Why should we believe "Coming Soon" really means something THIS TIME? |

Art Taylor was campaigning outside Sonny's Bagels this morning. I said that I'd never seen him post on this website; was he aware of it? He responded that he doesn't think the internet is a place for political debate. Okay.... He handed out copies of the endorsement from the News Record, and a personal letter, full of typos and grammatical errors, boasting about all the progress made and stating that the supermarket, SOPAC, Beifus, Irvington Ave., etc. will all begin constuction in the summer months--wouldn't that be next month? (now that I read it again, it doesn't say in which year this will happen!).

Mark, I still have not seen any responses to my questions above with SPECIFIC details about the river corridor & the jitney. Your literature claims them, so there must be a specific PLAN in place with start dates, finish dates and costs. Can you please elaborate or is this just more "campaign BS" as your literature implies? |

We are awaiting to hear about additional grant money for the Jitney. Either way, the parking authority is putting together a comprehensive cost analysis based on the current operation and how much will be needed to expand the service. Then during the preliminary budget hearings it will have to be voted on and if approved it would start sometime next year. As of now, it looks like there is a committment to move forward. My feeling is that we have to expand the jitney service to help relieve traffic congestion as well as the shortage in commuter parking spaces. The river plan is being coordinated by Main Street and the hope was to start this fall. Currently they are trying to finish the plans while securing grant money to assist with paying for the project. However, based on recent conversations they will probably start in late winter/early spring and finish the work within six months. Again, the board is committed to this project and we have already voted to move forward with the next step. If you would like to see or learn more about the specific details of the river corridor project, please contact main street. Remember to Vote Line A on May 13th www.leadershipwithvision.org

Mark, Again...WHEN will I be able to take the Jitney from Mayhew Drive? Your campaign literature states the jitney "will be expanded to the entire Village". If you made such a bold definitive statement, there must be a specific timeframe & plan for implementation. Otherwise, it is nothing but Campaign BS, no different from 4 years ago when we were told an "Arts center is complete" and "contruction will begin in August [1999]" |

Mayhewdrive: We are looking to have it operational by the spring of 2004. As you know there are other factors that make it impossible to state an exact date or timeframe. Right now the parking authority has to complete their analysis. We then need to get additional equipment which means we need to put it in the budget and go out for bid. We are hoping that NJ Transit will be awarding more jitney buses and since we are a transit village we would hope that we would be consdered again. So my realistic goal is the spring of 2004. Mayhewdrive, Could you please let me know the extent of your involvement with the Line B team? Do you speak for them in some capacity or are you an independent entity who is merely very vocal on certain issues?

Argon, While I have helped some of the Line B candidates in the campaign, my posts are EXCLUSIVELY my own and the Line B candidates and campaign have no prior knowledge or endorsement of them. In other words, the posts are solely my own and may or may not reflect the opinions of the campaign. I like to consider myself "an independent entity", although my frustration that is evidenced on this board has drawn me to get involved & be vocal in local issues, whether it be the Quarry or the imminent election.
