I thought I heard that there is somewhere to call to put your name and phone number on a no-call list for all businesses. Does anybody know anything about this? Thanks. |

I haven't heard of a "no call" list. We have an unlisted phone number, which means pretty much nothing anymore with caller IDs everywhere, but we still manage to get quite a number of solicitors calling. It took me a while to get used to it, but I just hang up on them. I'm sure it ticks them off, but it makes me feel pretty good! Haha. Let us know if you hear anything about such a list so we can all get on it. |

i always ask the caller to take me off their list. legally they have to. this will at least reduce the number of calls that you get. latley i am getting a lot of recorded calls. won a jeep, trip to flordia. the frustrating thing about this is that you can't ask to be taken off their list. |

Definitely tell them to take them off your calling list. I hardly get any calls anymore! As for the recordings, they leave you a number. You can call them back and have them take you off their calling list. |

We got call intercept on our phone through Verizon- which means calls that have a blocked or unlisted number can't get through. I've gotten maybe half a dozen sales calls since we got the service last year. |

Don't buy a telezapper. It's bad form. I simply tell them that it's ironic they called me, as I was just going to notify them to remove me off their list. I also inform them im on the national do not call list, and this is their formal warning. Any subsequent calls will yield a 5000 dollar fine. I then mention something about ESQ. This is my MATURE approach. ... One poor company caught me in a bad mood on a sunday night while trying to watch the Simpsons. They recieved an interesting message, as their was no real person to talk to. -enigmabomb-

enigmabobb, Spend the $40 and get the telezapper. I register on all the lists as I hear about them. The deal is the calls just keep ringing. My son worked at one of the cold call shops in CA for a while. He tells me that when people asked to be removed, the response is "no problem" and after the hang up, a big shout out, "drop one" followed by a group laugh. At the end of the shift they compare counts to determine who is buying the first round. Just think about the motivation of the cold caller. Do you know who s/he is, where s/he called from? Who are you going to report them to? When is the last time you read of a firm paying a fine? Screw the form, they call, I answer, they get zapped, a special beep tone and the call is dropped. (A hang up for me) The tone is said to signal the computer on the caller end that the number called was disconnected and the computer removes the number from the call list. My personal experience is that the calls have all but stopped since I plugged the zapper in. Only those that do manual dialing get past it and most of those are very local, low budget shops. So the next time the Simpsons are in the middle of a segment and your phone rings, remember that while you are discussing the fines with the cold caller, I never got the call.

Unlike many other states, NJ does not yet have "do not call" legislation, but it's coming. The federal law will go into effect in a few months, and then you'll be able to sign up at a Website. There are lots of exclusions, though, including non-profit and political solicitations. Also, if I'm remembering correctly, the "do not call" lists are (or will be) updated on a quarterly basis, so adding your name will not necessarily have immediate effect. For info o the federal "do not call" list, go to http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/donotcall/index.html. |

I second Nina's opinion. I've received 2 or 3 calls in the last year. Unlike the electronic equipment, calls don't even make it into the house, so I don't have to run to the phone and either check the caller ID or pick up the phone. The calls just don't come in. |

Is there a charge for call intercept? If so, how much? |

Just checked Verizon's web site -- they charge $7.50/month for the service. Although they have bundled services that include it (with caller id, etc.) Didn't know this existed! thx Pete |

When asked to take your name off a caller list, they are supposed to comply but this only last a few weeks. My husband and I resorted to subscribing to "Call Intercept" through Verizon. For a few bucks a month, this feature combats all unwanted calls. It has a special "intercept" ring that allows you to recognize a possible unwanted call and once you pick up the receiver, the person must state their name and on a tape feed BEFORE getting to speak to you! You can either chose to speak, reject the call or send the call into voice mail. It's awesome and well worth the extra bucks for peace of mind. |

Kibbegirl - if call intercept works for you, i'm glad. But personally as a caller, i can't stand the service. I call people from work quite often, and it'll take a full minute for the system to allow me to record my name, perform whatever machinations it does on its end, and then either leave me hanging with silence that never goes anywhere, or connect me to what turns out to be an answering machine. I now typically hang up when i encounter people with this in place because it's usually not worth my time. I often wonder how many valid calls people with this in place miss out on. |

George, I'd be interested to know on what basis Tele-Zapper and Call Intercept work. I have Caller ID and most calls from telemarketers show as "unavailable" or "out of area" (depending on which phone I look at). But so do calls from my son at college, some of my husband's offices, and my inlaws when they call through a long distance service like 10-10-220. I certainly don't want to intercept them! I have found that if I let the phone ring 3 times before I pick it up, 90% of the telemarketing calls turn into dead air. I am told that this is because they work from banks of phones that place lots of calls at once, and only the ones that are answered quickly are picked up. Of course, this doesn't solve the problem of running to answer the phone, but at least I don't have to talk to people. I have also become somewhat cruel and willing to hang up on people if necessary. |
