It broke my heart to read about Sakia Gunn, 15 of Newark. She was stabbed on Market and Broad because she was gay. And what's even more disturbing is that this violent “hate crime” happened in a neighboring town to SO -- SO, a town (with Maplewood) that celebrates its diversity and whose gay community is one of the largest in the state.

I feel that town leaders should do something. First, the town should sponsor a vigil to show support for our neighbor. Second, political and religious leaders should implement a program that teaches tolerance and promotes anti-violence. If such a program exists, it should be stepped-up to use this horrible incident as an example; even contact Rev. Thomas Ellis, head of the anti-violence group Enough is Enough of Newark and Basil Lucas of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (mentioned in the article) for assistance.

Your comments and thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you.
