Can someone please explain the purpose of Bill Calabrese's quote of George Washington that was printed in yesterday's News Record: "it's not important if God is on our side, what is important is that we are on the side of God and this community is on the side of God" I don't understand what this quote has to do with an election and it seemed a little Baby Bush-esque to be invoking God in a political context. Is Billy trying to say "God wanted him to win a political election"??? I honestly don't understand...can someone please explain. |

Edwin, Since you seem to know everything, why don't you try explaining it to someone as dumb as me & what it had to do with an election? Really...can you? |

The funniest part is that not only is it Bush-esque to invoke religion, but it's even more Bush-esque to MISQUOTE. According to several searches I performed, this quote is attributable to ABRAHAM LINCOLN, not George Washington. |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that quote was funny. I read it to my husband last night and we both laughed out loud. Sorry, but that quote just smacks of self-importance, IMO. |

Gonna lose the agnostic vote next time if he's not careful ;) I don't care what Bill says, who he quotes (or maybe misquotes), but I'd prefer he say things online, too. And I'm glad for Mr. Matthews' continued presence here. |

"I don't want to sound condisending but if uou don't understand that then no one will be able to explain it to you" I don't want to sound condisending, but it's condescending. "Condisending" is when our commander in chief dispatches his national security advisor to a foreign country to spell things out for some recalcitrant world leader under Gallic influence. I too thought the God quote was a very odd and slightly inappropriate thing for Bill Calabrese to utter, but I found it endearing in some way I can't explain. |

I can't find any attribution for this quote to anyone. Where'd you find it Mayhewdrive? (And don't assume that the News Record got the quote right.) |

lseltzer, The quote by Billy was printed in the News Record & can be read at www.mysouthorange.com I found Atttribution for the quote to Lincoln at the following sites (doing just a very quick search): http://www.nyfrf.org/uspresid.htm http://ilovefreedom.com/quotations/Abraham_Lincoln.htm http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/11/21/63310.shtml http://edwards.senate.gov/press/prayer_breakfast_2002.html http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/3797/quotes.html http://www.chiasmus.com/archive/msg00162.html I think you get the point. If he was trying to be profound(?) he could have at least taken 2 seconds to do some research. |

Clearly a case of a mortal moved, humbled, and reinspired by election to yet another term, to the point where he commits the mortal sin (in today's secular world) of stating his commitment to an administration -- and a town -- working for Good. Despite his spelling gaffes, Mr. Matthews "gets it". Pity young rapscallions who are too cool to get corny. Up here, we like Frank Capra. Our Titans United Performing Arts Center (TUPAC) features a year-long Capra Marathon every century or so. You might mention THAT to the folks looking for quality programming down there... --The Oracle Of MOL BTW: It's Bill, NOT Billy. Billy runs Reservoir Restaurant, Bill runs the Prescription Counter. Wise up! |

I see that neither time nor politics has changed Ed Matthews. G-d has nothing to do with this election...and I shudder to think there is any connection whatsoever to George Bush. I didn't get the quote either Michael. Same old you-know-what! |

Who said that if God is a sports fan then God probably roots for the New York Yankees? And if God is a Yankee fan does that mean that God wears pinstripes? If so is God a conservative republican? If so would that explain a lot about her? |

I don't understand why some folks are so upset about what Bill said and in what context he said it in. We all have the right to say whatever we want to say. And if you disagree with what he said that’s fine. I'm glad we have a place where we can vent...Hehehehehe

It is just my view, but when I read what Bill said in the News-Record, I was left with the impression that he felt I was on the other side of God (this is generally not the desirable place). Politicians invoke deities with some frequency; it was the "side" part that kind of threw me. If I have a chance, I'll ask him what he meant. |

When faced with opponents who said, "No PILOT", The incumbent remained staunchly pro-PILOT. Upon his re-election He offered this reflection: "It's simple - God is my co-pilot!" Sorry, I know this isn't the Haiku thread, but I just couldn't help myself. I couldn't figure out why this was even a topic of conversation, but to each his own.

That was a limerick, Nohero, not a haiku. This is a haiku: God stands on our side Satan's losing candidate Scowls menacingly Or: Demonic Dennis Cloven hooves give him away Could have been mayor And: Mild mannered, balding Calculator of budgets Disliked that PILOT Still more: Southern Orange town Spring blossom demolition Seasons change slowly (One could go on indefinitely.) |
