My son, who is 6 and a half, has been asking to have some drawing lessons over the summer. He loves drawing and wants to make his pictures "more real." Does anyone know a place or a teacher he/she can recommend? I'm already aware of Val's Art Studio in Maplewood, but their lessons sound not exclusively focused on drawing and somewhat oriented to "kid stuff" (like cartoon characters). My son is pretty earnest and only wants to draw "real stuff." |

You could talk to Andrea from Andrea's Art Barn. (I don't have her number handy, but it's hanging up around town). She's a serious artist and could probably offer appropriate drawing lessons for a 6-1/2 year old (she has a kid that age). Have you also tried getting your son some "How to Draw" books? Dover makes some simple ones for kids and North Light books makes lots more that may be useful. I loved working with those when I was a kid, and continued to reference them throughout my artistic career--even when it was not considered "cool" to do so. |

The drawing series by Lee Ames is extremely popular in our elementary school library. (Draw 50 cats/cars/dogs/etc... there are at least 20 books in the series.) |

I second the recommendation for Andrea's Art Barn. My daughters have been taking classes there for two years. |
