Can someone recommend a local lawn care service for simple, regular maintenance? What's the going rate? Thanks. |

For simple mowing, shrub trimming and a quick blow, you should expect to pay about $15-20 weekly. This would generally take 3 workers about 15 minutes. Anything more complicated, you should expect to pay in the range of $150 monthly. |

Are there any services that do the weekly mowing, etc. and also do occasional reseeding, fertilizer, weed/pest control, etc.? And, if possible, toward the organic/natural end of the range for the latter items? I know, I'm probably hoping for way too much, but I'd like to get away from the heavier chemicals and we've also run into scheduling conflicts between the "lawn care" and the landscapers ... |

Check out Dean Weiss, at www.deanweisslandscape.com , who is also a regular advertiser on this board. Price is based on the types of service you need as well as size of property. Us2's $15-$20 estimate may not be in the right ball park for your property. Sac -- Dean does all of that, too, but you'll have to discuss the specifics of organic pesticides with him directly. I don't use them on my lawn. |

Mario Vargas mows our lawn and does some additional work (not general weeding though he might be willing to). He also does a spring cleanup. We pay $35/week with a lot that is about half an acre. My friend pays the same amount for a much smaller yard. I don't know who she uses. If interested, you can reach Mario at (973) 672-0431. |

Dean does not seem to have openings for new customers. I live next door to an existing customer -- but he said he could not take on my house. My neighbors believe he is cutting back on "maintenance" work (mowing etc), to do more design and landscaping projects. (the latter -- I'd say his work looks great at the neighbors!) Good luck -- Pete |

Whoever you choose, if they are applying any chemicals other than just fertilizer, check to see that they have a pesticide license ( looks like a driver license). The license is required by the State and entails proper training and liability insurance to handle the chemicals, which are dangerous to health and the environment. Unlicensed landscapers applying chemicals are undercutting more responsible and knowledgeable operators at the expense of peoples health and the environment. I have used the Oriental Gardners for several years now. They are excellent and do lots of "above and beyond the call of duty" stuff. $20.00 a week for mowing. Muoi, the owner, lives right here in Maplewood. Phone 973-762-4699

The only problem with Oriental is that you never get a bill. When he does give you a bill it's for $400.00. There's nothing like being on the ocean!

We used Oriental last year, and got a bill at years end, it was exact, and correct to the penny! My only gripe is he never did any extras we asked for, pruning our large ornamental evergreens, and mulching my beds. This year we are using Magaletta Landscaping like us2innj. So far they are doing a fine job! He did our patio installation last July... Also, we used True Green to care for our grass the last 2 years. Our lawn looked horrible. They did about 6 treatments. We also canned them this year. We are using Fairway fertilizer (from metropolitan Plant in W.Org.), a 2 application series, and applying it ourselves. The lawn looks great so far. We also did a grub treatment. |

We used Oriental last year. The crew that handled our lawn did a generally careless job, damaging a tree, gouging the lawn, showing up during the drought to blow dust around.

Peteglider, I know someone who just signed up for Dean's weekly service a couple weeks ago and another friend who is starting service this week. Not sure why you would say he is not taking new customers since I know for a fact he is. Dean's weekly crew does a great job and always finds a way to get my yard done regardless of weather, holidays etc. This has not always been the case in the past with other landscapers we have used. I agree with you on the quality of his design as well. Second to none.

singlemalt -- no answer to that?! could it be those clients are also having landscape design work done (not a discussion I had with him)? another possibility - my neighbor is *not* happy with his lawn maintenance work (quite the opposite experience of what you say!) - if he's aware of that, he may want to concentrate on other neighborhoods? /p |

I signed up w/ Dean this year. So far, so good. I like that I can email him and he responds! He also has been responsive to the fact that i don't want pesticides. |
