I just finished building a sandbox, made out of Fiberon decking boards, should last forever. Now I need same sand to put in it, any reccomendations as to where I may purchase this? Drug Fair has it for $3 and change for a 50lb. bag, was hoping to find it cheaper, any ideas?

Home Depot carries it. I don't know the current price, but it was $2+ per bag when I got it last year. Millstone probably carries it, too. If you need a lot of it, you might have it delivered. Check with the garden supply stores Orange Garden Supply, in Orange, or Turf Grass, in Springfield to see if they carry sand that's suitable. Of course, delivery charges may make it more expensive than the other places. |

thanks njjoseph, I did try Home Depot but they didn't have any. Your right about the delivery charges, maybe Drug Fair is my best bet after all. |

I would be hesitant to buy bulk sand for a sandbox. The bags of sand sold for this purpose are washed and screened. The bulk sand may not be clean. Most of this sand comes from dredging operations to the best of my knowledge and you don't know what contaminants may be in it. Try the HDs on Route 22 and in East Hanover. They usually have a better selection than the store on Springfield Avenue. |

Bobk is right, and it's for that reason I used the word "suitable." He's also right that you should try the other HDs. Or, try the one in Union again in a day or two. Stock changes from one minute to the next. (Also, did you ask about it at HD? It's usually kept in the garden section, but I have also seen it in the same aisle as roofing materials.) |

Some advice about sand - don't get that cheap stuff at HD - it's filthy and dusty and you won't want to play in it! Babyland on Essex St in Milburn used to sell a good quality sandbox sand. |

You can also try any Toys are Us. We got our sand there the first year and it was very clean. Last year we refilled our sand box with the stuff from Home Depot, and it was filthy. |

Just saw it at Toys R Us today— $4.99 per 50lb bag.

Hold on a minute here: you are debating if sand is clean?? Last time I checked, sand was dirt. What is clean about dirt? |

steven, you must be too far removed from your own days in the sandbox. sandbox sand is finer, less dusty, and usually lighter in color. |

I'm assuming that all the sand in these various stores mentioned so far are construction/paving sand. But does any place sell beach sand? |

Home Depot sells two kinds: "Carribean Sand" and "Play Sand". Both say they're for sandboxes. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy that Carribean Sand. It is so fine that it leaves your kids covered in powder. It's just gross. My second sandbox tip: never leave yours uncovered. Neighborhood cats think they make great litterboxes. A third sandbox tip (what the heck): it only takes two 50lb bags to fill the Little Tikes turtle sandbox. |

I ended up getting sand at the HD on Rt22. $2.87 for a 40lb. bag. Not the tropical sand, the golden sand, it seems very clean and my son and daughter are enjoying it. Thanks for all the input. |
