I use my real name because I couldn't think of a good fake one. Really. I stay polite and out of heated discussion online for two reasons: because someone (maybe a teacher?) once told me that if you wouldn't want to be quoted in the paper, don't say it; and because Mark Twain said, "It is better to be silent and be thought of a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." |

Cathy: I'm so glad you are back to good health and back to this board. Your absence was definitely noticed. You have been missed. Hopefully, your mother's illness will prove temporary and she will be back to full health soon. My best wishes to you and your family. Joan |

Cathy, how nice to see you at the Mayfest. After a health crisis (or a loved one's) it is rather good to be alive. In spite of all our nastiness on this board, it is a fortunate place we live. Usually no Tornadoes or Cluster bombs in the air. We've a great deal to be thankful for. I'm thankful your back |

alia- sounds Twain-ish, but that quote is from Abe Lincoln. the real name and pseudonymous posters on this board are by and large great folks. But most of the tiresome attacks and tirades are written behind the protection of a few creative alter egos. You can skip them, but a few hit & run artists can ruin an intersting thread. I liken it to so much garbage in an otherwise nice neighborhood that somehow you can't reach down and pick up and throw away. And the site suffers as a result. |

Drewdix, Yup. Funny thing, but I find I can be influenced more easily by someone who is civil than someone who is rude. That makes more of a difference to me than which side of the political spectrum he/she is on. But that's just me. Tom Reingold

Andrew, does your family own the Zorn's chicken place on Long Island? Love those chickens! Although it's been many years. |

Thanks again friends and neighbors. There's actually something good about having been away from MOL and gotten some fresh perspective to read with again. I'd forgotten how polarized some discussions become for no real reason that I can discern other than that the conversation is happening online rather than face-to-face. I've certainly participated in this sort of "pushing back" behavior here. Sometimes it happens between very thoughtful, thought-provoking and well-meaning folks (the initials JB and JC currently come to mind.) Oh, well. Sometimes you can choose to stand aside while the storm rages around you. You don't have to get soaked by it as well. But sometimes you want to jump in, raincoat or no. The good wishes folks have sent/called/emailed, etc., have truly reached their destination and been part of my recovery and re-entry. My spirit is being refreshed by your attentions. Thank you. Cathy

Soshannah, I am not related to that Zorn, but I have heard of that chicken place on LI from more than one person. Oddly, Zorn is a more common name than I ever would have thought. A fellow named Zorn went to college with me; no relation (though they did cleverly put his mailbox right below mine, ensuring that we got each others mail for 4 years). When I lived in Chicago a Chicago Tribune reporter named Eric Zorn lived down the block from me. No relation. I am neither related to the old Seahawks quarterback Jim nor the jazz musician John. But, of course, I am very proud of the people to whom I am related. Not that anyone would know them. And, as always, I am not anon. -Andy |

Andrew, ("Andy") I'm curious. You have stated several times as - non sequitors -that you are "not Anon." Why do you keep stating this? Whomever is writing under the screen name Anon has given several clues to his identity. And isn't that part of the fun of MOL? Trying to guess who's behind the mask? Here's what we know about Anon. He lives in Voting District 8 because last year he voted for Ellen Davenport in the Primary, and the only people who could do that are registered voters in Voting District 8. District 8 narrows the possibilities to around 150 people, but Ellen received only 72 votes, so the suspect list is shrunk to 70 (assuming she voted for herself, and so did Don.) Since half the district is male, the suspect list shrinks to around 35. He also stated that he did a write-in vote in the November General election. There were only 4 write-ins in the general. The list narrows! Anon stated in the Education thread that he ran against Kevin Friel and lost. Kevin has only run in 2 elections. Once as District Leader (won against 2 opponents) and once as Board of Ed, and none of his opponents lost. Ergo, according to Anon's postings, he is either Terry Lowe or Andrew Zorn. But wait! Remember that Anon praised Ellen Davenport for "acquitting herself" very well on the TC. This eliminates Terry Lowe, leaving Andrew Zorn as the only possible suspect. Either Andrew Zorn is Anon, or someone is misrepresenting themselves an Andrew Zorn. Andy, you're not Anon, then you should ask Dave Ross to discontinue Anon's posting priveleges. Thankey

Maybe anon lied about clues about his life. Maybe he didn't vote for whom he claimed to have voted for. There might be many possibilities. |

Aquaman (“Sherlock”), I see you’ve thrown down the gauntlet. Your post displays a nice piece of detective work but your deduction is incorrect. I really ain’t anon and I really am me, with my eponymous username. I only post under this-here username and I only have one account at MOL. Really. Whether you believe me or not I am speaking the truth. Among other things, I am far too boring to set-up an alternate identity and attempt to maintain that as a distinct personality. The rest of this message should prove that. I should also mention that I do not know who anon is and I have no idea if your research regarding anon is accurate, but your one item about me is correct. Not bad, but then again I gave you a head start by posting under my own name. But your investigation is not for naught as it explains why over the last two months about eight people have asked me, directly and indirectly, if I was anon. I figured, using the statistical reasoning exemplified in your post, that first of all it was probably really only about six people who asked me, because a couple must have asked twice. Then I thought if six people think I am anon and, continuing in the same method of analysis, the number of active posters on MOL is about 12 (accounting for people with the stamina to actually maintain multiple accounts), then half the active posting universe think I am someone I am not. So I thought I’d join in the fun and attempt to set the record straight with "several" (two) statements in the Our Names thread (conveniently initiated by someone else, which should add to the intrigue here). I totally support anonymity on the message board and don’t really care if people post under multiple identities. The only time it seems a little odd to me is when I have to pen a reasonable reply to someone and have no choice but to start with something like "Aquaman," which I think kind of pulls some pith out of the ensuing post. When I signed-up on MOL I chose not to be anonymous and only post under my name to avoid accidental misrepresentations. This, apparently, didn’t work. I apologize to anon for dragging his (or her) name into this. And I don’t agree with the idea of suspending the posting privileges of someone just because some hobby-gumshoe thinks something nefarious is afoot. Finally, I thought that the “Thanky” was not only an undeserved low-blow (even more so because your conclusion is wrong) but I also thought it was copyrighted on this board and not available for public use. But I’d be willing to admit I was wrong about that. And that’s Mr. Zorn to you (grin). |
