I'm sure this has been covered but the search function isn't working at the moment and I need to order a birthday cake for my four-year-old's imminent birthday. Looking for recommendations for a local bakery that makes delicious cakes, cutely decorated, for reasonable prices?

Yes, it's in the archives somewhere.

I always get great cakes for very good prices at the bakery in the Shop-Rite on Morris Avenue in Union. They have many choices of fillings, flavors and decorations and they are practically always open. Just be aware that the cakes serve many more people (usually twice as many) as the sign indicates, so compare sizes of cakes rather than advertised numbers of servings.

There are lots of other bakeries around that make great cakes, but I think that the Shop-Rite ones are just as good as or better than the others at a much lower price.

I've also heard that Costco is a great place to get reasonably priced cakes, but no first-hand experience there.

Costco is wonderful!! I used to buy my cakes locally, as I always prefer to support the local business, but they were $50 or more a pop. Then I went to Costco, and they had the same things for only 14.99 and amazingly tasted much better.

I second (Third?) Costco. You need 48 hours notice though.

Costco is great for cakes. Do yourself a favor though擁f it's an early party get the cake the day before. I almost had a heart attack a few weeks ago when, not only was the store's opening delayed 45 minutes, but my carrot cake was nowhere to be found. Luckily they decorated one for me while I waited. (I guess I'm also lucky I went to pick it up, no one else would have known what was supposed to be written on it!) Our family particularly likes the chocolate with cheesecake filling and the carrot cake. Mmmmm!

We've used Jacqui's in town. Not only are the cakes amazing but they can do anything you want in terms of decoration. We had an amazing Thomas the Tank Engine one year. This year it was Batman, Spiderman, and Superman.

She has some pictures on her website http://www.sweets-treats.com/cust_cakes.htm

Shop Rite in Livingston. They did a wonderful job decorating my 5 yo's Cinderella cake (complete with Cinderella figure, pumpkins, and carriage). Cake was good and the price for a 1/2 sheet cake was the same as what most bakeries charge for a 1/4 sheet cake.

I'll second Jacqui's. We got a fantastic cake for my father's 70th Birthday. We asked them to do a napolean sheet cake -- it was amazing!

Another vote for Costco - i love their whipped cream cakes. And when we ordered last month, they only required 24 hrs notice. Although an extra day can't hurt.
