I found a baby racoon in my front yard. It is too young to be on its own, but I don't know if it is an orphan or if the mother is out foraging.

In the event that it survives the night - I give this about a 0% probabiity unless the mother returns - does anybody know of a wildlife rescue place.

You could try calling the Animal Emergency Center in West Caldwell or Animerge out in Somerset County (yes, it's far, but...). Both are animal emergency rooms staffed by vets 24 hours a day/seven days a week. They are geared for pets but may take orphaned baby wild animals. Animal Emergency Center is at 973-226-3282 or 800-4-911-PETS. I don't have Animerge's number but you could call information if necessary.

From www.backwoodsbound.com

Bar-B-Q'd Raccoon

~ 4 - 6 lb. raccoon, cut into serving pieces
~ 1 cup red wine
~ 2 onions, sliced
~ 3 bay leaves
~ 1 tbsp salt
~ 1 tsp pepper
~ 3 cloves garlic, sliced
~ 2 cups of your favorite barbecue sauce
~ 1 tbsp paprika

Place the raccoon pieces in a large pan. Add the wine, onions, bay leaves, salt, pepper and garlic. Add enough water to cover the meat.

Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.

After 1 hour, remove the meat and drain. Place the raccoon in a greased baking dish. Mix the barbecue sauce and paprika together and pour over the meat.

Cook at 325 degrees for 50 - 60 minutes.

Serve and Enjoy!

Tjohn:

How is the baby raccoon? Did s/he survive the night? If you still need information on wild animal rescue, you might try contacting Turtle Back Zoo. Even if they do not need another raccoon themselves, they should be in touch with people who can help.

Unfortunately, the raccoon was the victim of vehicular homicide. Actually, if I had had the time, I would have taken care of the critter myself. Also, with small children around, I didn't think an wild animal would have been a good idea.

Tjohn:

Your compassion is to be commended. It's horrible that the baby raccoon died that way.
