Did anyone notice that the front page of this week's News Record (dated May 22) was completely devoted to Maplewood? And did anyone further notice that the lead article on the front page was about the debate recently sponsored by the Hilton Neighborhood Association, between the two Democratic slates running in the Maplewood June primary? And if you did read the article, did you also notice that it discussed the differences between the two slates as the slates themselves articulated them? Now, can you also remember that the News-Record not only did not attend the April 30th debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters between the two slates running in South Orange, it also had absolutely NO coverage of the debate so that any differences between the two slates was left virtually undisclosed for the deliberations of SO residents in helping them decide which slate best represented their interests and those of the town of South Orange. While the "locaL community" newspaper denied this information on differences between the two South Orange slates, the N-R editorial staff itself apparently had no problems discerning the diffrerences, as they endorsed the entire slate of incumbents. One might legitimately wonder how they could have arrived at their decision without such knowledge of the differences. If the editorial staff did have such knowledge, they nethertheless abdicated their journalistic ethics in not covering the debate and providing S.O. residents the same information on the differences as, apparently, the N-R editorial staff had themselves. I have cancelled my subscription to the N-R as a result of its retreat from ethical, impartial journalism. But the need for local impartial South Orange community news is real and vital. Given the tabletop printing and publishing capabilities that home computers provide, is it possible for a group of enterprising, ethical, impartial folk to come together and produce a South Orange Gazette with news of note??? |

It's about time. We definitely need a new paper in this area. |

If anyone is interested, get a copy of the "Tri City News" published by Dan Jacobson out of Asbury Park. It's an alternative newspaper which covers Red Bank, Long Branch and Asbury Park, although it focuses mainly on Asbury Park and Red Bank, since Long Branch has two of its own weekly papers. To a large extent, the "Tri City News" has had a lot to do with what's going on in Asbury Park and has called attention to its growing arts community. It is completely independant and is a pretty remarkable paper, and probably would receive acclaim from Dave Ross and Sebenois. |
