If I were to buy Thomas train set for my two year old, what do you recommend--there seem to be so many options. Is more better, can I get away with a $100 set? How useful is the table?

Start small. There are many occasions and reasons to keep adding on and on and on. The table is a must. It keeps the tracks and trains more organized and easier to play with. Otherwise it becomes a huge mess on the floor. Some tables have built-in storage too. We got a BRIO table at the toy store in Millburn and it was half the price of the 'official' table sold at Toys'RUs. Good luck. Our son plays with his Thomas trains every day for hours at a time and he has been doing that for 18 months.

First, make sure your kid really likes playing with trains. My kid LOVED the videos, but I wasted hundreds of dollars on those beautiful wooden trains before having to admit that my kid thought they were boring.

He would spend a few minutes playing and then ask if he could go on the computer. Finally, after we EVEN got him the ELEVATED set, and he showed minimal interest, I had to admit defeat.

I did have some fun playing with them myself, though.

You can save a bunch of money by buying the track at Target, all the track is the same. The Target set comes with some crappy trains, but its still a deal. I also agree with Nan. Our son was into it for a while then lost interest but I know others whose kids are still into it after years. Start small and see how it goes.

Thanks.
Nan (or anyone else): If you're interested in selling your set (if you haven't already), we'd be open to getting a gently used set. Privateline me if so. thanks again
