Hi, This question has probably been asked a gazillion times but...I'm moving to Maplewood in a few weeks and need to know where are the local health clubs? I currently live in Montclair and here everyone goes to the Montclair YMCA...is there something similar in Maplewood? I'm looking for a place with cardio and weightlifting equipment (not so much classes) that is open early during the week (6:30am ish)...any suggestions?? Thanks!! |

ErinS, you can go back in the archives to look at a lot of different comments about health clubs. There are plenty of facilities in this area, including YMCA's. There is a YMCA in Springfield and one in Summit. There is also a Motion Fitness in Millburn. |

There's also the JCC in West Orange, and the Connection in Summit. |

And South Mountain fitness in SO Center--at Valley and SO Ave. See if you can get a 1 day pass when you go for a tour and you can really get a sense of what works for you. |

We have been members at MotionFitness (behind Whole Foods) for over a year now and we love it. The club is owned/operated in-house and gives great service as result. |

I love Motion too. The owner/operator used to be a manager at one of the Equinox locations in the city, and he modeled Motion after it. Equinox used to be my gym, so I feel right at home. |

Depending on what you're looking for there is Maximum Fitness, on Millburn Ave at the corner (behind the wine store). I'd say its more oriented towards racquetball and fitness training -- no classes that I know of. I go there, but since I'm not into racquetball I find the equipment/machines are rarely full. BUT -- I used to go their other location -- which was much nicer/newer -- this one has some "orange carpet" in a few areas! Pete |

I also go to Motion Fitness, and I also love it. As mentioned above, the owner used to work at Equinox, and he's always around and very involved. In fact, he's also a personal trainer and is right out there on the floor with the rest of the trainers. He knows many members by name and always has a smile on his face. As a mom, I've also found the babysitting to be top-notch, and my daughter loves it there so much she starts to flip out with excitement as soon as we pull into the parking lot. Also, Motion has been very customer-service oriented, and has lots of great personal trainers if that's what you're into. I have been using a PT for almost a year and have learned a lot. |

I also go to Motion Fitness, and I also love it. As mentioned above, the owner used to work at Equinox, and he's taken many of that gym's high-end looks without a high-end price (about $89 a month, I think). The owner, Myles, is always around and very involved. In fact, he's also a personal trainer and is right out there on the floor with the rest of the trainers. He knows many members by name and always has a smile on his face. We've been pretty happy with the JCC - and no, you don't have to be Jewish. The kiddy swim classes there are excellent! |
