Appropriate graduation gift?

Our friend/neighbor's kid is graduating from 8th grade. I'm thinking gift certificate to a music/video store. Three questions: 1. Is $25 OK? (I have no idea what the going rate is when you you know & like the parents pretty well but aren't 'best friends'). 2. Can anyone recommend a particular store that has a good selection for this age? 3. Any other ideas? We've got a few things that would work for a teen in the $25 range. Either way, I think $25 is a thoughtful gift. (Unless they're having a big catered party.)
