Any recommendations on where to bring kids for haircuts in the area? |

The barber shop in Maplewood is a classic "first haircut" kind of place (for little boys in particular.) We go out to Summit and visit Salon 4 Kids right near the train station - they have the videos and seats that are little cars etc. I also know that the Livingston Mall has slon for kids. The folks at Anthony Garubo actually gave two of my girls their first haircuts. They were kind enough to seal a lock of hair in an envelope etc. |

There's also a place in the Livingston mall. Not sure what it's called, but it's in there. Some people just do it themselves. Good luck! |

I second Larry's barber shop (downtown Maplewood)for that "Norman Rockwell" kind of first haircut feeling--although I hate Norman Rockwell--I still recommend Larry's! |

Larry's looks the part but my toddler had a miserable time there. (Ended up with a scratch on his ear and a bad haircut. Of course, the barber shop ended up with combs and scissors all over the floor and other patrons diving for the exits to escape my son's blood-curdling screams.) We now take him to Michael's Barber Shop in Millburn, where they manage to do an excellent job in under three minutes while keeping his panic level to a minimum (hugs, kisses, toys, lollipops, and visits to the nearby Dunkin Donuts afterwards all play a part in the process). They're at 387 Millburn Avenue, (973) 467-0420 and they are really nice (Mr. G goes there, too). |

Just curious, how can you hate Norman Rockwell? |

Actually, when I went to school in western Massachusetts I met people who knew him and said he was a nice guy. I also think he's a very talented illustrator whose work appealed to many people. I just find his style too hard edged and and his harsh use of color makes me nausous. Also the way he depicts humanity is too simple for my tastes. I prefer painters like John Singer Seargent or Thomas Eakins or Edward Hopper or John Sloan. |

The simplicity is the charm. And another vote for Larry's. |

Moods in Hair is having a Hair cut-a-thon to benefit the YMCA (I believe) coming up soon. The owner is a really cool guy named Phil and they are in So Orange on 2nd Street. The number is 762-1070 and I think they are closed Mondays. |

I hesitate to mention her name, in fear that I'll never be able to get another appointment, but I really like Tina at Kids Kuts at the Livingston Mall. I don't know if she's particularly great with kids who are scared, because mine aren't, but I think she gives a great cut, and she's not afraid to cut a girl's hair short, which I like. |

Salon 4 Kids in Summit is great but a tad expensive for many parents: $16 per kid, not including tip. Plus you have to make appointments. Kids Kuts at Livington Mall is about $12 per kid, I think, and is walk-in. However, having tried both places, I think Salon 4 Kids is a cut above (sorry, couldn't resist the pun). And for a kid's first haircut, they will put the lock of hair in a little card with the date, etc. |

Iv'e used a lot of the kids' salons, but I really like Magical Scissors in the Millburn Mall (although it is a bit difficult to reach now with the closing of the bridge). You never need an appt, and while you are there you are transported back to the early '60s (old-fashioned hair dryers, built-in ashtrays, rolling curler carts). |

We've always had great experiences at Larry's. A couple of weeks ago we took our 4 yo and 20 mo for cuts and they both did great. It was especially fun for my son (the 4 yo) because one of his friends came in for a cut and they watched each other get their haircuts from the foot rest of the barber chair. |

Larry's is great with our son. He hates getting his hair cut, and screams through the entire haircut. Every one of the barbers at Larry's had cut his hair, and has been patient and kind to him, you can't beat that! |
