I tried to post this three times..that file locking thing is annoying...

Anyway- I need new contacts. I just called Dr. Donald Greenfield's office in Millburn to make an appointment. I told the receptionist that I would be paying for the visit out of pocket, that the visit was specifically for contact lenses and needed to know the cost. 100.00 for the eye exam, and TWO HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS FOR A @#$@ CONTACT LENS FITTING! There is no way I'm paying some schnook 250 bucks to watch me place contacts into my eyes and ask how they feel. So can anyone recommend an eye doctor who A) isn't trying to gouge his/her patients and B) has success with fitting patients who have bi-lateral astigmatism?

Thank you

Based on recommendations on this board, I went to Dr. Maria Cardona in Maplewood village. Cost me $240.00 for eye exam, fitting & contacts (the weekly ones).

Don't know about the bi-lateral astigmatism part.

Thanks Millie. 240 sounds much more reasonable.

I have had great experience with the doctors at Short Hills Opthamology (on Milburn Ave just before Morris Tpk). I have insurance that covers the visit, but not the lenses and they have never charged me a fitting fee even when I switched from hard to soft lenses. They even saw my husband in the office on a Sunday night instead of sending him to the ER for an eye injury.

Once you have your prescription--go to www.visiondirect.com to buy your contacts. You will save a huge amount over having the doctor order them. They carry all the name brands.

If you are a COSTCO member, they have a great optometry dept. If you're not, you might consider it. Along with other services they provide, their pharmacy (and prices for drugs) is also outstanding.
