A few weeks ago I called the S.O. engineers office to inquire if/when the streets here in the Newstead are scheduled for replacement or even major repair and was saddened to hear that we are not even on the schedule. Speir, Glenview, Hoskier, Crest, Duffield, and all streets in between are a complete mess and extremely dangerous. Additional drainage, new curbs and a new roadway are needed.

The engineer stated the roadway, curbs and drains are all orignal from when the development was built over 70 years ago!

What is the process for getting the Village to take action in a similiar way to the area above Wyoming in the Lenox Ave. area? Are we going to wait until someone gets seriously hurt before we take action?

I would appreciate any feedback on how we can get something done.

The town has put the road re-surfacing program on a rotation so that the entire town can be serviced in a 7-10 year period. We are very aware of the conditions of those streets, and they have been patched on several occassions. It is believed that the drainage that was originally put in place was inadequate. (As an aside, this should be a lesson for us to insure that any major construction that is planned in the near future be constructed in a fashion so as not to replicate this problem) That means that patchwork must suffice until we budget enough money to solve the drainage problem and then re-surface the roads. The issue has been raised in the Public Works Committee meetings and I will push to get this project on the list as soon as possible.

You know, Patrick, my little dead-end street got the gravel-and-tar treatment a couple of years ago, and ever since we've had to contend with tar soup every summer. Every heavy truck that comes into the cul-de-sac and turns around (garbage, recycling, construction, fuel oil, etc.) pulls up more tar, so now there are holes in the street surface in addition to the mess all over the kids' shoes and the dogs' feet. Whenever we have a block party (and we do, every summer) we buy sand to throw out on the street to try to minimize the tar damage to shoes, but it doesn't help much.

(Last summer we got a tar-reprieve during our block party: it rained like the preamble to Noah's flood.)

For some reason, when all the other streets nearby were resurfaced after developing the tar problem, we got left out. Is there any way to put us on the list for resurfacing sometime soon?

Pat,

Thanks for the reply. Any idea on how much longer it will be until the drainage situation is addressed and the roads fixed (not temporarily repaired)? It's already been 70 years. :-)

Anyone else care to comment?

J.Crohn - call Sal Renda at village hall (378-7715) tell him the name of the street and we will discuss it at the next Public Works meeting.
Singlemalt - I'm sure it will have to be put into the capital budget. This year is out. I will find out from the village engineer if he has a timetable in mind.
